Apparently he genuinely didn't know that his being trans was a personal secret.

I mean, Survivor is a weird show, people really do lie about weird shit in order to play a more interesting character and manipulate each other, it's part of the game. He just fucked up and didn't realise he stepped into a very personal reality.
I think a lot of it was also just ignorance on the concept of trans people being stealth, considering gay issues put a lot of emphasis on being openly gay.

It's a shitty situation and not okay, but I don't think it was malicious, and overall seems to be a good learning opportunity for viewers.

I can't speak for the US, but I work in reality TV and there are no writers technically. Don't need them when you have producers. Don't need scripts when you can just cast for a certain type of person, know how to get them to say what you want them to say, and have hours of footage that you can cut however you want if they don't give it to you.
There's nothing appealing about watching shitty actors read from shitty scripts. Producers contrive stupid scenarios and contestants are often huge phonies who play to what the producers want from them, but it's all "real" in the sense that the acting is all improvised.
