How important is it to pick someone who specializes in GID over a regular therapist?

I'd steer clear of "GID specialists". More often than not, they're gatekeepers with a very backwards idea of what being trans means. A "regular therapist" could very well be more open-minded. I got both of my referral letters for SRS from shrinks who had no experience with trans matters.

I found a gender therapist who was listed on a local trans support group's website and I never had a problem with her level of understanding or approval of transness.
But it doesn't sound like there's one approach that works for everyone
