gay pride started in the '80s when nobody was out of the closet and people started dying of aids.
gay pride was a movement to let people realize that there were gay people all around them and that it was important to create funding for aids research.
gay pride may not be necessary now that a lot of people are openly gay, but in the past this was not the case and letting people know you were gay was a huge risk and a political statement.
