Think you folks can give me some courtesy advice?
Is there a best way to inquire (or simply figure out) what someone's gender identity is if it's not readily apparent? I mean this in the context of differentiating androgynous/crossdressing people from people who are actually trans.
I know it isn't necessarily any of my business, but it sure would help avoid later awkwardness since I like femguys but not women/transwomen.

Ask pronouns, they=genderqueer femboys=he tomboy=she.

Ask their preferred pronouns in private.
If they flip a shit about this, they are crazy SJW territory you didn't want to touch anyway. Most of the time you'll get an answer because it's a perfectly polite question, and if the person tells you he/his pronouns, it's pretty safe to assume male identity and vice versa.

As cringey as it can sound, "How do you identify?" would probably work best if you don't want to risk offending anyone.
Thanks! That's helpful.
My hesitation was inadvertently offending someone but like you said there's no sure fire way to avoid that depending on who you're dealing with.

I know from experience that alot of them are pretty nice and not crazy at all, and simply felt comfortable telling me they like to go by "they" since I asked. How about that?
