They're not specifically afraid of homosexuality as it is. It's a byproduct of the fact that Russian leadership uses church as a way of keeping control and social order at status quo which makes it easier for them to rule in traditional Russian way - as autocrats.

Homosex challenges the role of church and Christian faith in Russian society and that;s unacceptable to the Russian leadership that derives its moral base for rule in Orthodox church.
