Gender is fake anyway and the most important parts of sex are changed by hormones (although that's a matter of opinion, but honestly I don't know how people can see genitals as more important than smell/pheromones, skin texture, fat distribution, and all the small details about the way a body reacts sexually with a given set of hormones going through it)

Yes. Because gender is NOT:

- your sexual genotype (XX or XY)
- your sexual phenotype (peen or vag, tits or beard, etc.)
- your social role

It's a fundamental sense of yourself AS a sexed person, both in relation to other people and in relation to your own body. For most people, this is interchangeable with the first two things above, because they all match.

If they DON'T match, you can experience:

- distressing physical/sex dysphoria, including feeling like sexually dimorphic parts of your body are alien, or feeling "phantoms" (e.g. phantom penises in FtMs), the latter of which are believed to be similar to the "phantom limb" experience people have when they've lost a limb to an accident
- social dysphoria, where you feel very distressed or disoriented by people treating you like the gender associated with your phenotypical sex and where you also might automatically/subconsciously see yourself as the opposite sex and relate to people that way.

This is PROBABLY caused by errors of sexually dimorphic development in the brain - in utero, or early in life. That's still being researched. Root causes are largely unknown, but there's a couple of genes and one drug (which I think is now banned by the FDA, but it used to be given to pregnant women) associated with it.

So yes. We ARE that gender, because that's literally what makes you trans - being a different gender than your sex.
