Being a muslim in the west is a minority. Being a christian in the middle east is a minority. So, what should be protected? Just because it's a minority in (y)our country doesn't mean that the majority shouldn't be protected from it's archaic operations on human control. Which it has.

There are two points I'd like to make here:

1) As a Christian, I am well acquainted with the fact that there are people who want to misrepresent religion in this world for their own agendas. I get told constantly that I cannot be both gay and Christian, even though that is an absolutely false assertion unsupported by any Scripture. 2) I have a thing for Middle Eastern men and have been with a few who were at least nominally Muslim. So I speak from personal experience when I say that some of them are VERY tolerant of homosexuality. I discussed religion with a couple of them and learned quite a lot about Islam. Muslims revere Jesus as a prophet and I'm convinced that they worship the same God as us and the Jews. The idea that fundamentally all of those things were human is true. Nietzsche wrote about this a lot. When he said "God is dead, and we have killed him", he didn't mean that God was literally dead, he meant that the church as a system for organizing and focusing society was over, and that humanity would have to find a new way to give meaning to their life. For a while, it seemed like Rationalism would be that something, but truth be told we still haven't found a proper + universal substitute yet 100 years later.

The thing is that yes, it would be fantastic to have all the good of religion without the bad, but we just haven't figured out how yet. Religion worked, at least on some level, and I guess there is a natural tendency to prefer to stick with something that works imperfectly than dare to experiment with alternate but unproven moral systems like utilitarianism or whatever.
