Because generally it's not considered a girly thing, so parents don't get their daughters video games, and so they don't develop an interest in them growing up, and so it remains "not a girly thing."

I wish I was kidding, but two of my closest friends befriended me over pokemon. I was a freshman in college when HG/SS came out and the explosion of pokewalkers was awesome. Actual people to battle and trade with, like in the 90s during pokemania. Imagine the pokemon go craze that lasted 3 days, but with a game that has depth to keep people playing and only people who actually really like pokemon are playing.

I'd say about 90% of everyone born after 1990 play videogames. All my friends, female or male, play videogames.

Videogames have never been as accessable and inexpensive as they are today, and with such variety of games you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't like atleast one game. They've basically become as ubiquitous as color TV's. I think a better question is "why aren't there many cis girl hardcore gamers" which probably has to do with the differences between men and women.

Men typically focus heavily on things they like, whether it's videogames or music or whatever. Women are more interested in a variety of things and rarely focus all their attention on one of their hobbies.
