Just ask if he's seeing anyone recently. You can say you have a friend who'd be perfect for him or something if you need a pretense.
Or point out that someone else is attractive and gauge his reaction.

Ask him if he has a girlfriend.
If he says yes, he's straight.
If he says no, he'll probably ask if you do just to be polite.
If you're out you can just say 'No I'm gay', and you can tell by his reaction to that if he is.
Or if you're not out just say no and ask him when the last time he dated a girl is.
If he says 2 months ago, etc. he's straight. If he says never he's either gay or just a beta virgin. To clarify which one you can say something like why not, you don't look like you'd have any problem finding a girl, etc. If he says dunno just too nervous he's straight. If he says he's gay, he's gay.
