I kind of liked it desu. I was disappointed too, because I wanted them to get on mones and fully come out as trans, but I figured this is actually a pretty realistic look at it. Especially for a country like Japan, where this kind of thing isn't spoken about in the same way. I mean, Nitori clearly wants to transition, but realistically still lives at home and seems to be planning those things for after leaving high school/starting to work at the okama bar.

Sadly, he decided to repress at the end. It's likely that he'll revisit his dysphoria issues later in life, though. It's also possible that he grew out of his phase, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Same. Reading through that almost felt like going through the wrong puberty all over again. The growth spurts, hair growth, voice changes... ugh. And then there's Nitori being unable to pass while crossdressing anymore (one person explicitly cited "male skeletal structure" when clocking her).

Really wish she had the balls to explain her issues to her family and gotten some help. Maybe even self-medded if necessary. Was just hoping for it the whole time, but nope. Not even the older transwoman told her how to get HRT. She could've ended up a cute early transitioner.

My problem with Bokura no Hentai is that a lot of it feels like wish fulfilment. I don't know much about Japan's hormone laws but I've heard they aren't exactly throwing them away. The way they put the kid on hormones pretty much still pre-teens is really... nice? It's a nice idea; I cried reading Wandering Son when Nitori's body started growing more and more male, and I wished it had been a happier story but for the vast, vast majority of trans people, particularly girls, it's just not like that. I guess it depends on what you're looking for in the story though.

My favourite character in Bokura no Hentai is the friend who cries with his older sisters when he starts puberty and can't go around crossdressing anymore.

In general I felt like the drama in Wandering Son felt more real than Bokura no Hentai, constant crossdressing school plays aside.

Pretty sure they only gave Marika AAs. Also Bokura no Hentai takes place at least ten years later than Wandering Son so they're more accepting of trans people. Though you are right that it is more realistic that Nitori wouldn't have anything done for her.

Also yes about Tomochi crying when he couldn't cross dress. Family has no issues giving HRT advice to a total stranger but tosses their own kid to the curb (even if he was just an AGP trender).

Yeah, I also felt that way. But I guess the differences in the stories makes me appreciate them a bit more. Wandering Son is nice because it's relatable and more realistic. But it's the same wish fulfillment in BnH that makes me feel, "yeah, she made it."

I don't think they did desu. There's always going to be a fair amount of "gender roles" (if you can class clothing as "roles") talk when discussing trans kids because it's the most tangible way that they feel uncomfortable. But if it was all about gender roles, as you say, then neither of them would have expressed body dysmorphia (Takatsuki can't handle periods, binds her chest from a young age, wants a penis. Nitori is horrified by wet dreams and feels guilt when masturbating bc penis, voice issues, height issues later on, etc.). The mangaka also goes to some subtle effort, in my opinion, to present the naturally masculine personality of Takatsuki and the naturally feminine personality of Nitori, while not linking it to gender roles - primarily their emotional responses to things: Takatsuki tends to get pissed off and violent, he doesn't respond to people doting on him etc. Meanwhile Nitori cries when she feels stressed out by situations, and she tends to worry more about other people's emotions and trying to comfort them. Although they both write in the diary, it's shown that Takatsuki's entries are pretty much a written down sequence of events that happened that day, while Nitori goes really deep into her emotions and how she feels.

This isn't about Nitori wanting to bake - something that's kind of just mentioned a few times, or Takastuki wanting to play sports - she plays on a girl's team with other active girls, the author is trying to show it's deeper than that.

I think it's down to experience. Because AGPs have the experience of years of teenage boy horniness, and watching porn etc. their brain will naturally see the perviness in things, where girls are generally more likely to see it in a purer light.

Not saying that all girls are pure angels and all males are perverted demons, I'm just saying that proportionally, more men are perverted than women, and biology supports that.
