He probably won't give me a hug or speak to me this year because he found out I legally changed my name.

Me too! I called my Dad, and when he learned I changed my name recently, he said Merry Christmas and hung up. I don't even see him ever anymore.

Busy being born to a Soviet family. The USSR was secular, Christmas was cancelled and all the celebrations/traditions were moved to New Years. I just put up the New Year's tree and will see my family in a week to exchange presents and count down to 2017.
The upside of having a family full of atheists/agnostics is no one thinks God hates gays. The downside is that "gut feeling" or whatever is as valid a reason as any to dislike gay people!
