The vast majority of customers cannot identify with lgbt characters in the first place, and the sexuality of these characters barely ever serves a function.

And yet practically every single main character is straight.

So in this case it's merely a matter of identifying with the main characters.

But that does not apply to lgbt characters.
They're not gonna shoehorn in a minority character just for 2% of their customers.

I would argue that that is part of it, at least it feeds into your main point. Because the progressive media is going full retard about it (video game media being particularly vocal) the companies know they can get brownie points because of guaranteed positive coverage. I also partially feel it is a bit of cynicism on your part because whos to say every company with an LGBT character in it was doing it to add a check in the box for brownie points? I think its a grey area in-between to be honest that goes back to media coverage, because it sets up a situation where you can almost never include one because no matter how tastefully/subtly done (as I think it was in this case) it will get blown out of proportion because its the 'IT' thing to do.

Most complainers about a lack of diversity in games are surprisingly lacking in diversity themselves.

This is a misnomer. I've noticed this dumb attitude towards media where a show either has to have several gay characters (disproportionate usually) or no gay characters. Those are acceptable. If they have just one main character out of 10 being gay, despite that being proportionate to statistics, people shout "token" and suddenly it's a bad thing. Which is such a silly whine in the first place. It's like people think it's bad that straight white dudes want to make games that include people other than straight white dudes.

If you let conservative rhetoric take over your mind, nobody will ever want to put LGBT characters in their projects. Consider that.

As long as said character is somewhat developed and not a big stereotype, I appreciate it and think it's neat.
