The fact is nobody else is ever going to care about you as much as you do. (Well, okay, maybe your mother.) My point is that you need to love and care for yourself because other people are too busy looking out for themselves.
We are taught by the media that romantic love is going to happen to us and a strong handsome prince is going to come into our lives and give us everything that we need, but the reality is that even when we do get significant others in our lives they will be preoccupied with other things to the extent that we will always feel empty unless we are taking care of ourselves.
