Because most STD's are curable so "meh, I'll take some penicillin and it will go away" is their attitude. Add to that HIV/AIDS is now a manageable disease and herpes is so prevalent that's it's just not important to some people.

And it's not just the LGBT community. This attitude is very common with any sexually active groups.
