I wanted to tell you that it's actually quite common for individuals like your father, that is biological males who repress a desire to express themselves in a societally feminine way to have their repression go hand in hand with conservatism. That's most likely because if they weren't conservative in the first place, they wouldn't have repressed and simply done what they wanted to begin with.

I have actually heard of even two Catholic priests (and another as I decided to look it up just now) coming out and transitioning to female. One was an Italian at some point in the 60s or 70s, and the other was a more recent Irish American in the US. Members of their congregation described them as conservative and no-nonsense. Needless to say, people were shocked their conservative priest came out as transgender.

But how should I proceed now? I really don't know how to face him anymore. I've been thinking about it the whole time but it just saddens me thinking about it.

There's the concept of exposure therapy. You could try looking at pictures of old crossdressers on the internet and read their stories online. When it feels like you are prepared for the next step, ask if you could join a local crossdresser support group for their meetings. As you see them more as ordinary people you could eventually face your father. Now you could also do this with your father himself, but you would need to tell him. But his feelings could be hurt by that, or he might just be happy that you're trying. That's why I suggest using strangers.
