Interesting. I try to just focus on my personal relationship with God and not let other people get me down, which is why I didn't go to church for a long time. I told my mom that I find it frustrating that there are almost no gay characters in mainstream Hollywood movies and that on the few occasions when there are, people always say it's being "forced down their throats."
My mom said that since 95% of people are straight, Hollywood is under no obligation to include gay characters since people wouldn't be able to relate and that movies aren't supposed to be political anyway since they're shown to millions of people (although I feel like that's exactly why every movie inevitably IS political). And that basically I'm wrong for wanting more gay characters and the lack of them has nothing to do with homophobia.

She was like anyway what about Brokeback Mountain and Rocky Horror? That's two mainstream right there! I said yeah, those movies that were made 11 and 41 years ago? Can't you understand why that's not good enough? Especially since the only two movies you could name weren't even lesbian? She said no, you're wrong for wanting more.

It just really upset me. Why tell your gay daughter that it's not realistic for people like me to exist in a movie? My parents aren't overtly homophobic but they were in camp "I don't support gay marriage because I don't care. I don't *oppose* gay marriage either, I think it's just so much work to change a law that doesn't matter anyway." When gay marriage got legalized, they were pleased but when I expressed worries that Trump/Pence would want it repealed, they said "so?"

Bluhhhh. I got to thinking about it because Campbell's released an ad featuring gay dads, one of like three gay ads I've seen in my lifetime. All the YouTube comments (I know, I know) were saying that gay representation was being shoved down their throat. People think it's unrealistic for me to exist, that I am "too much"...

Most people are straight. Most parents are straight couples. It makes perfect sense that that's reflected in film. If a character happens to be homosexual and it only comes up offhanded or is implied, then it doesn't even really matter to begin with. It means nothing, as it should. Think Dumbledore, the impact of his character doesn't change either way.

I think if people were truly "orientation blind" then you could have way more gay characters in media because people could relate either way. The likelihood of seeing a film featuring lesbians prominently is small. And it's not because people don't want it, it's because people literally don't care. Being gay is no more a character trait than being straight is. People love Dumbledore because they love his kindness, his understanding and his intelligence. I don't think the Chinese couple's goals, nor this anon's point, had anything to do with visibility or acceptance. The lesbian couple is merely trying to live in comfort with each other. That comfort would not come from full disclosure. Their part in visiblity and acceptance is letting the media write about them, like this BBC article.
