Real answer is that it's often done by Tumblr, usually makes very little sense, even with mental gymnastics, and tends to be something snowflake, so it becomes even less likely.
The closest I can remember to what you describe is seeing "coded" characters in much older works, or from a culture with very different concepts of sexuality (was Aquiles bi, or just felt really angry about his friend's death?).
