Females generally like to feel cute and young, males generally like to feel powerful and mature. Calling a male a boy carries the connotation that he's not an adult or is immature, and makes them feel inadequate. Calling a female a woman doesn't really carry a bad connotation, but calling them a girl carries the connotation that they're youthful and cute, which makes them feel more appreciated and enjoyed.

The term "girl" can be applied to women up until the age of about 30. While it would be nice to have a feminine word for teenagers and young adults(kinda like a female equivalent of "guy"), there isn't one yet, so "girl" performs that function.
