I have never shaved my butt, so I can't understand how what you're talking about feels, but I personally always hold it in in public till I reach a bathroom where I can safely release it.
At college, it gets really difficult sometimes, but I try my best to hold it in; my stomach often hurts.
I have often held it in for several hours.
At high school I use to hold it for many hours till I got back home.
I know that this is not healthy and possibly very dangerous in the long run, but I don't want to fart in public; it's really embarrassing.

Yeah, that'll happen when your cheeks are smooth. I was a little surprised the first time it happened too. Either learn to hold it in, change your diet so you fart less (I also tend to use food replacement powders on and off like Soylent, which was a bad combination in the beginning), or let your butthair grow out again.

Also, don't shave. Wax. It's smoother, lasts way longer, won't ruin your skin and won't scratch when hair is growing back.
