There have been pretty significant changes to their franchises over the past decade, moreso than many other multiplat and PC franchises.

You're only pointing out speculation about the console, things that haven't been specified yet. I for one am excited for this, just because Nintendo isn't wowing you anymore doesn't mean it's objectively bad.

Nintendo hasn't really wowed anyone outside of their core fanbase for years. Their home systems have been too underpowered and have install bases too small to attract multiplats. The only reason to buy a nintendo system has been to play nintendo franchises. If the switch doesn't have enough power to hold its own against its competitors, it's going to just be the same thing that's been happening since the wii.

I have been playing wow since 2005. it's one of the only games that's ever taken my interest so hard. I also play a lot of dota2, my interest in that started with wc3

I don't like tabletop rpgs but I do love other board games (like, party games). that's a pretty new interest tho, one of my friends in college got me into that during our senior year

Yeah, like I said, I enjoyed it. I honestly really liked the co-op. As far as single player goes I'd say I liked Galaxy more.

This is why I find it hard to rip on Nintendo. Their games are still good. The problem lies more in their business model and failure to attract enough interest outside of their core fanbase to actually continue to make their home systems viable. Gaming is at its core a business, and there's no shortage of developers who made amazing games that don't exist anymore because they simply couldn't run a business.

I've been really into hearthstone for a couple years now, but I play Overwatch and League with friends when the opportunity arises. I haven't played a single-player game in a long time desu - graphics card is shit now, and the golden age of indie games is long gone.

The Wii U was objectively a failure. It had good games, but failed to attract any interest outside of their core fanbase. I have a Wii U, I like my Wii U, but Nintendo has sold only 13 million units. Over a period of 4 years. To put that in perspective, the Dreamcast sold 9.4 million units. The PS4 has sold more than 40 million units in 3 years.

Here's the thing: Nintendo has competed by making their systems underpowered, but sold at a price point which justifies their weaker hardware. That was their business model and it worked. The Wii U was too expensive to attract the impulse buyers. If the price point of the Switch isn't in the same range that the Wii was in, it's simply not going to save their home consoles.

You're a Nintendo fan, I get it. You like Nintendo games and like what Nintendo does. To be critical of Nintendo you need to be able to step outside of that sphere and think like the average gamer. Ask yourself: why should the average gamer care about Nintendo in 2016? What has Nintendo done that's grown their install base? What has Nintendo done to innovate that hasn't also crippled their systems?

But like, the GameCube sold 20 million some odd units across its 6 year lifespan, and that is still widely praised as a great platform and generation for Nintendo.
13 million is not that bad for Nintendo in this day and age, they have been on a downward trend literally every generation after the other and haven't seen numbers above 40 million units since SNES. The Wii was a freak home run exception.

Sony has also been decreasing from one gen to the next, pretty significantly too. They aren't grilled for lack of innovation in the same way though.
Comparing the sales of a console in the 90's to one in the 2k10's is not a good basis for your point because of this.

Point is, every platform is on a downward trend, Nintendo was simply never as big as the two market leaders. They won out by pushing online connectivity and multiplayer, while Nintendo focused on experiences. The difference in sales numbers is expected.

Many people loved the Wii U, it has a healthy handful of well received games. And most of those games were simply never designed to be the kind of thing that would be market dominators.
13 million is a huge install base, a game can be successful for passing even 1 million sales, esp on a platform that's cheaper to develop for.

The Gamecube was not widely considered a commercial success, it was the least successful system of its generation. It sold 20 million units. The Xbox sold 24 million units, and was an upstart "first entry" into the console market. The playstation 2 sold more than 155 million units.

13 million is actually not a large install base, it's on the low end of an install base that's even sustainable for something like a game console.

You're correct in saying that sales numbers don't directly translate to end user experience. However, sales numbers and install base do very directly translate to one thing which has basically been Nintendo's problem in the home console sphere since the n64 era: third party support.

The Gamecube has a good library, but what needs to be addressed is that the vast majority of games that made the gamecube what it was were Nintendo titles. Ironically enough, the largest 3rd party developer for Nintendo during this period was Sega. The level of 3rd party support has only dropped from each generation to the next, leaving fewer games that are non-Nintendo IPs to draw people in.

What worries me about the Switch being a Wii U successor is that it's likely to continue this downward trend of third party support, install base and sales. With the exception of the Wii, each Nintendo system since the NES has sold worse, and this also includes periods of significant growth in the console business.
