I've been raised among excessive amounts of both.(Peak number was 5 cats and 6 dogs. Average is usually 4-6 animals with at least 2 cats and 2 dogs.)
We've had just about every size and breed of dog ranging from chihuahuas and yorkies to newfoundlands and pit bulls. We've also had a variety of cats, though the only real difference I've noticed is that tortoiseshell cats tend to be absolute maniacs as kittens and moodier than usual as adults.

Cats are the best. They're the easiest to care for, their fur is the softest and they purr. They make the best personal companions for home and require almost no training when properly cared for. Just don't get more than 2. Cat politics are bullshit, and having multiple cats just leads to all of you being miserable.

Little dogs are second best, though the barking gets annoying as fuck. Older dogs are much better than younger dogs, and for the love of god learn to properly train your dog or do not fucking get one. An untrained dog will ruin your life.

Big dogs are literally just a gigantic ball of stress. They're impossible to care for and are incredibly destructive and incredibly expensive. Even when properly trained they're still incredibly stressful to live with. Do not adopt a big dog unless you want to sacrifice all hobbies and free time in exchange for caring for your dog.


And seriously, don't get a shitton of pets, and especially don't pathologically stalk the craigslist pet section, adopt new pets on a monthly basis, and then rehome them two week later.

Big dogs, as long as you provide them with plenty of fun and exercise, are chill as fuck. But if you do it right, it never feels like work. It's more like just spending time with a best friend.
