Same reason they like TF2, almost 100% male cast.

Because there are pokemon that look like one gender,yet could be either. Those pokemon only have minor differences depending on sex, if any at all. You could have a ripped female Machamp or an elegant male Gardevoir (I do wish we'd get a dashing female Gallade). There's also the implied freedom a child gets once they hit 10 to wander the country/world with no supervision and only get harassed by the local crime syndicate who don't want kids for their bodies, just their fighting monsters for whatever reason.

tl;dr version: There is a pogeyman relevant to EVERYONE'S interests. Also, the freedom gained at 10.

Everyone my age loves Pokemon.
Solid enough portable game and a common fixture in all our childhoods in some form of another.
Just so happens gays don't have a harpy wife nagging at them to put away the games, or a slobbering child to run after.
