What you're not getting is that's just not the proper place for establishing that type of human interaction. If you're a timid/shy person who has difficulty interacting with other people then a setting such as the gym where most people aren't willing to be receptive to socialization isn't the best place to try and setup a date.

It would be more appropriate to start such interactions with them as you're both leaving the gym, or maybe in the locker room after they've changed.

Starting your interaction at those times would put you at more of an advantage because they'd be more receptive since their main task of coming to the gym has been complete.

If you do want to interact with them while they are at the gym, VERY short interactions could open up conversation entering or leaving the gym. That sounds convoluted as hell, but hopefully helpful to guys who have trouble with this sort of thing. Same sort of thing as if someone is at the library studying, or anywhere else. If they are sitting reading a book, don't interrupt them, but if they are walking or something you can say something small to them or even just smile, and once outside you can pick up a conversation.
