Hi girls! I'm a 52 yr old transgender woman who has lived my whole life in the closet. Like most, I knew for a long time that I was different but never had the courage to tell a living soul my deepest, darkest secret until last night. What started out as an argument at 1am ended with me coming out to my wife. I've never been so scared in my life! I was shaking and crying and struggling to get the words out. I've been really struggling with this daily for a few years and was just terrified to tell anyone. So I just told her. She was amazing! She didn't freak out, call me names or anything, she listened and asked the usual questions; am I gay? do I want out of our marriage? do I want to transition? surgery? etc. This morning she woke me up and read me some articles from wives of transitioning women.

She is concerned about our children (as am I) and how this will affect our future. I cannot express the gratitude for her understanding. I know this hurts her (she married a man and her whole future vision was to be married to me as one) and that it is going to take time to navigate all this overwhelming stuff. BUT it went better than I had ever hoped for; she wants to stay with me and still loves me. Not only that but it helped her to understand me better and it brought us closer together than we have in a long while. I am excited for my future for the first time in decades and I just had to share! Sometimes it isn't all doom and gloom! Right now, its about baby steps so we can navigate this carefully but any step is a step in the right direction for me. I'm so happy right now!!!

I can confirm. I'm a mtf and I experience it definitely as a curse. I fucking hate people like Milo Stewart, Justin Dennis (search: youtube) who actually live in the delusion they are trans and are all enthusiastic and happy about it ("Muh, everybody experiences gender dysphoria to some degree and I am totally okay with my body, I don't need hormones or anything, but I am trans"). I am generally nice to people, but I wish cancer upon people like these two.

Well, yeah. I've heard that a lot, too, and I don't feel brave at all. The only options I have is
1) killing myself or
2) transition or,
3) maybe(!!), trying to live a total miserable life (and I don't know whether this third option is really an option because I think I would go totally crazy after a while and resort to option 1 which is suicide).
Now, an animal that is driven into a corner may chose to attack its predator. Is that bravery? I don't think so. The only bravery I have is the bravery to not have killed myself - period.

Sexuality is about who you want to date/fuck. Gender stuff is about how you feel about yourself and want to be treated by others. They're just different things, one's about your and one's about who you're interested in. There's some correlation of course, the majority of people are straight (or straight-identifying), but it's certainly not 100%.

What's likely contributing to the confusion we as a society have defined sexuality as what kind of person you like, relative to yourself. The problem for trans people is that once you switch your identity over, your sexuality also "reverses" even though what kind of person you like hasn't changed at all. (Although it can change for some people as they go through HRT and stuff, but that's another story.) Suddenly you're gay when none of any of this was about gayness one way or the other, it's about how you feel about yourself.

It might have been easier if we defined sexuality as "likes male traits" vs. "likes female traits" and bisexuals as "likes both", but it's too late for that now, really.

I think for your mom you've got to just work on breaking that connection between gender and sexuality. To flip her argument around, what's the point of straight women, why don't they just be gay men?
