Two types of people wear them.
Some sports people (Jocks) wear them. I think because of claimed comfort as well as health benefits.
Gay men wear them as a sort of "Masculine Lingerie" because of two reasons, they show off and give access the butt, and because of their association with jocks.

I can only speak for myself but I like wearing one sometimes and for some reason it makes me feel more submissive.
