why are so many trans people in computer science?

just how many are actually in the field? have you encountered any?

pic unrelated
>>
because wearing a skirt makes you better at programming
just ask /dpt/
>>
I have literally never met someone trans in my life, not to mention in compsci at uni in the uk.
>>
>>6635252

Most that are trans that I've met that are in IT/programming have already been in the field already.
>>
>>6635244
I think it's more a confirmation bias of being on 4chan, kinda like saying why do trannies like anime so much? We're on 4chan bro; home of the shut in computer otakus.
>>
>>6635267
I'd assume it has a lot to do with this, skewed results from the general type of person that would be here in the first place.
>>
>>6635244
trans and it student here

when i graduate the money's going to be good
>>
>>6635267
that's wrong, every single tranny on okcupid is a programmer in San Francisco

they're also into metal/vidya/anime
and almost every girl is a pleb
>>
>>6635244
I like being alone
>>
>>6635267
There are so many, but they aren't all in there. More in sex work than any other industry, then pink collar jobs.
>>6635842
The money isn't good and it's worthless when you say IT instead of CS.
>>
>>6635876
>they're also into metal/vidya/anime
>tfw I'm a tranny that's a metal, vidya and anime loving programmer

I am the living stereotype. Only thing is I'm actually not in San Francisco.
>>
>>6636103
>The money isn't good
Depends. There are generally three levels of IT work

1) The middle class to lower middle class one - stuff like computer repairmen, computer sellers at major stores, anything that requires some (though not a lot) of proficiency with a computer but pays in the 30k to 50k$ range

2) Upper middle class jobs - actual programmers, game devs, web developers, app developers etc, they require good knowledge of computers and software but not a lot of ambition or independent persuits, salary from 60k$ to ~300k$ in like silicon Valley

3) (Successful) entrepreneurial level/upper class jobs - requires having really good to excellent knowledge of computer software and hardware, requires having plenty of new ideas and requires quite a lot of business skill and luck to succeed, they're the IT millionaires and billionaires
>>
>>6636312

You forgot about administration roles (Sysadmin, DBA, network admin, service engineer, even some NOC roles), which sit between 1 and 2 on your list (usually between $50k and $150k, highly dependent on location and experience).
>>
>>6636349
I'd place sysadmins and similar in group 2 but, yeah, for more accurate list you'd have to separate middle middle class and upper middle class jobs.
>>
>>6635244

I'm doing computer science and math because it lets me be a shut-in while guaranteeing that I'll have a suitable job that will allow me to pay for my surgeries in the future.

Fucking around and studying things like art, literature and philosophy would have been great, but there's no money in those fields.

Law and medicine require too much human interaction.

Teaching pays terribly.

Commerce, business, economics, accounting etc. are incredibly dull.

Natural sciences all require a PhD if you want to be anything more than a lab drone.

Engineering is full of weird autists.
>>
>>6635244
because most of the time you just deal with a computer that doesn't judge or is out to kill you
>>
Trans is a type of autism and lots of autists do cs
>>
>>6635244
Either skewed statistics gathering or something to do with relations to counterculture. Mostly everyone in compsci has gotten used to being on the fringe of society, so there's less reason for trans people there not to transition.

This seems to increase directly with levels of counterculture. There's an AGP board out there that has entire threads dedicated to infosec posting.

CS tranny here.

I think its because we're shutins and socially isolated for so much of our lives that a lot of us take up computers when we're young and then that kinda evolves into CS.

I'm not sure how many are in my classes because I go to a nerd college and a lot of the cis girls look nerdy (which is cute af imo, not saying thats a bad thing) and don't dress like normal people or are really tall and stuff, and its really hard to tell the difference between unattractive or queer nerdy/tall cis girls and trans girls.

But I am almost 100% sure I've clocked one trans girl who has been in a few of my classes. And one trans girl who used used to wait for class across from my class in the CS building.

There are quite a few girls who I would totally believe were trans but they could also just be unfortunate cis girls.

Also I've noticed that there are a lot of bi/les/queer cis girls in CS for some reason.
>>
think about it
trannies grew up lonely, on the PC and watching anniemay
what else are they half decent at?
>>
>>6636996
For example in one of my CS classes this summer there were 2 girls who were like well over 6" (I'm 5'11 and my eye level was around their necks). One of them kinda had unfortunate facial features (nose mostly) and was really shy and sat alone and never talked in class, but had a female frame that was super thin. The other one's face was basically cis but she had a pretty androgynous voice and some androgynous facial features.

Also there have been a few guys who I got an ftm vibe from but its hard to tell if they're ftm or just short guys with slightly androgynous voice and features. Its so not fair that ftms can just grow a beard and then pass ;-;

>>6635244
There was a beautifully clever trans person on university challenge this week. She was doing her masters in cs, but by the end of the show: she was a master of my heart
>>
>>6637061
>She was doing her masters in cs, but by the end of the show: she was a master of my heart
That's so wonderfully corny I think I'm in love.
>>
>>6636552
>guaranteeing
Rajeev and I have some bad news for you
>>
>>6637991
>Rajeev and I have some bad news for you
No? Not that anon but even in the US there's a shortage of IT specialists in Europe it's especially bad. And it's not like IT is going to become obsolete any time soon so the demand for more and more coders/sysadmins/whatevers will only grow in the future.

IT is an incredibly safe field to go.
>>
>>6635244
from my experience, passable trannies are in social jobs, and ugly fat hons are in computers
>>
>>6638132
Complete bullshit
The "shortage" is so they can hire H1Bs for pennies. I have a CS degree from a top American uni and haven't found a job in years. Several of my classmates are in the same position or have given up
>>
>>6638555
>CS degree

If you have a CS degree, you're not an IT specialist. CS is a degree for software engineers, not IT.
>>
>>6645241
The first post in the chain was referring to CS not IT
>>
>tfw starting it degree and transition at the same time
I hate being a stereotype... But damn in 2 years I'm gonna be a qt with loads of money :3
>>
>>6638555

Your story is absolute bullshit.

Senior dev at a PaaS company, btw. 12 years in the industry, currently mentor several 4 year guys and one recent grad as well.

Right now companies are desperate to hire devs. They prefer experienced ones, but those are so hard to find they'll take fresh as well. And if you graduated without an internship, your school done fucked up.

If you actually have a CS degree and no job, you either haven't looked, or have other major problems (high demands, unwilling to leave a non-tech city, major personality problems) as a candidate.

H1Bs don't get hired for pennies. In fact, it's illegal to offer lower wages for them. They DO allow employers to treat the H1B people like shit because loss of job is loss of status.

Sounds like you're either lying to support your agenda, or you're really bad and blaming immigrants for that fact.
>>
>>6645442
typical. it's always oldfags complaining about how the young generation is just bad and lazy, so it's all our fault.

labor laws rarely get enforced. see the entire illegal employment industry and the minimum wage laws in position that get tips. it would be extremely difficult to prove misconduct here, and guess what? try, and you're out of a job and deported. this shit is indentured servitude.

there is no shortage of american talent, there is a shortage of american talent that's willing to work 100 hour weeks in shitty conditions, and if you don't think that has an effect on others, you're either delusional or lucky to be insulated
>>
>>6636312
Look your IT certificates might qualify you for jobs at the level of a janitor. Many unskilled jobs pay in the 30-50k range. Things like game dev don't make shit, the only ones earning 300k in Silicon Valley are 50 year old consultants and CEO of a big company. Dot Com bubble burst more than a decade ago, everybody knows computers now. It's a basic skill like tying your shoe laces, don't be a dumbass.
