Incredulity aside, in many ways the meme supports the meme. I know of few trans girls with "traditional trans attire" who did not first observe the meme, laugh, then order their stripey knee socks.

At this point, it's safely self-perpetuating.

Like you normally learn from TV/magazines, your peers, mother. Most trans didn't have that.

This pretty much. I didn't really have any trans clothes, then my trans friend bought me rainbow striped thigh highs so I could meme better. He was a trans boy too, and not the type to go on 4chan or whatever, and even he knew and participated in the meme. Stripey socks seems to be a trans thing, not just a trans girl thing.
