What makes gay guys act like the stereotype?
When I was in my late teena, even though I probably have never really been exposed to any gay culture or met any out people, I still found myself subconsciously doing stuff like putting my hand on my hip or crossing one arm to the side and using it as an armrest for my other arm. The only thing I can really think of was my older sister.

It's called mechanical leverage. You use this technique if you need your hand at face level for extended periods. Nailbiters do this a lot, regardless of gender or sexuality.
