Maybe I'm cynical here, but I don't think it necessarily represents progress or acceptance. The people at the convention were basically in a frenzy, I honestly think they will just agree with anything and anyone trump brings on stage. I'm sure if trump now said something like "changed my mind, all lgbt people should get the chair" the crowd would agree with that too. I think it's just blind faith in trump rather than them being accepting now.

There might have been some of that happening. Thiel was pretty careful to immediately follow up "I'm proud to be gay" with "I'm proud to be an American" and if anything is an applause light it's patriotism, especially with that kind of crowd.
