Tangerine. It's a dramedy about transgender sex workers, written, directed by and starring transgender ex-sex workers.
Anons are going to pile hate on it because it features black non-passing(ish) transgender sex workers, but it's accurate in so far as it's thought 1/3 - 1/2 of trans women in the west engage in sex work at some point during their life, 50% of trans women experience sexual violence at some point in their life, trans women are disproportionately affected by issues such as homelessness and drug addiction and all these rates are significantly worse for trans people of colour (and iirc blacks have a higher trans incidence rate than whites).
/lgbt/ won't like this, as the film does not depict some nice white trans women who pass 100% and are socially conservative housewives married to a good aryan man, which is how /lgbt/ wants to say is the way most trans women are, but instead depicts black hons doing crazy shit and being prostitutes (just look at how much hate is piled on hons and "degenerate" trans women here). It's accurate though. A white neet from a middle class background who posts on /pol/ and is still in the closet won't recognise much of themselves in the film, but it's an accurate depiction of being trans for many people across the west.
>inb4 "I'm trans and I'm not a sex worker/black/a degenerate/non-passing" and so this is a bad representation
A film showing a middle class white neet transitioning into a fully passable, socially conservative woman would be worse representation as that occurs less frequently

Is the movie actually any good? It's playing in a short place close to my place, but I won't see a film just for representation or some shit, I want it to actually be, you know, good.
I'm into arthouse shit and actually work in film studies, so take that into consideration.
>>

I think it's one of those movies where you can only either absolutely love it, or absolutely despise it. It has an atmosphere that draws certain people but mostly strongly repels others, not to mention the subjects discussed (transgenderism and prostitution).

I personally loved it to death, it's one of my all time top movies. It's a wild and fun adventurous movie with an easy enough plot to follow. The climax is amazing, how all the build up just unravels itself at the last act (I won't spoil anything)

would definitely recommend, Tangerine is rewatch worthy

Definitely not my favorite book by any means but reading Nevada helped me a lot when I was first realizing I was trans (mtf.)

wow, I did not think I would have such trouble coming up with an example for this because I think I hate all of them

I'd say the best is when trans women are portrayed by actual trans or cis women, whenever it's a dude I find that incredibly disrespectful

like if they made a biopic about me and had a dude playing me I would cry

so Transamerica is pretty cool for that and has a scene with lots of real trans women like Calpernia Addams and Orange the New Black seems good from what I've seen, Laverne Cox is a good advocate

I really want to see a movie about an early transitioner, a really passable trans girl having a love story with a guy, like a high school romantic comedy, that would lay down so much groundwork for making it easier for that to happen in real life, young guys wouldn't feel so insecure to be seen dating trans girl
>>
>>6592092
I'd say it's worth watching even if you don't like it, because it's not bland storytelling.

i remember that movie being a bit wonky/weird

did it not end with the main character having to revert to presenting as male?
>>
>>6591990
Looks really good. (Whilst I'm rightwing, there are basically no black people in my country, so I gave no racial bias preventing me from seeing this)

It's going on my list. The only movies I've seen which deal with trans characters before are Boy Meets Girl (which, if you enjoy romcoms is average, otherwise it's awful) and Gun Hill Road (which was pretty good, and seemed fairly realistic)

If media includes anime,
I'd say Hourou Musuko/Wandering son.
It's an anime about two teens, mtf and ftm trying to figure out themselves.
>>
>>6597246
yes but they're both practically prepubescent so what is there to figure out?

the story would be more interesting 10 years later in each of their lives, after hormones have destroyed their dreams.
>>
>>6597266
Ehh it's late and I didn't know how to phrase it. I feel like the ending needed that desu, left me quite empty.
>>
>>6591462
your first mistake is implying they exist. trans men and women don't exist. they're just mutilated men and women. the whole "trans" thing is a mental issue like schizophrenia or whatever. they should be patients in an asylum, not an Operation Room.

For a trans guy film with a gay romance, Romeos is bretty good. The trans Guy's actor is a cis guy.
8/10

Sense8's Naomi is a pretty good trans character even though she's kinda cringey sometimes for non-trans related reasons imo.

Predestination is pretty good even though it isn't really about transgender people and the main character is confusing when it comes to their gender. But i feel like maybe for cis people it gives a pretty good thought experiment of like "how would you feel if you woke up tomorrow and you were the opposite sex". Like its a more morbid and realistic depiction of being forced into the wrong gender than body-swap type things a lot of people think of (even though its never really made clear whether the character identified as female or male)

I like this film. It's actually "gritty reality" and not that fake edgy tarantino blood "gritty reality" and the story is shot in an interesting way, and a lot of the characters resemble people I know (albeit from my cushy private college and not the streets of WeHo). Also, it's technically the best Christmas movie I've ever seen.
