This guy was an athlete also. I guess its good and healthy to start young. But it made it very awkward thinking I was talking to an adult and it was just a kid.

He was precocious. That didn't help clue me in. Later on, I learned how sexually aggressive teenagers can be with older guys though. Its difficult to be polite and convey that its nothing personal, I just dont want to go to jail and am frankly not interested in people with no life experience.

That seems normal. For some reason, it seems more understandable that a young person would want someone they can relate to. Eighteen would naturally be a tricky age to navigate, since there is a lot of institutional overhead in a young guys life, usually school or college. I don't know if the same applies to young military guys; I would assume so but the military mixes ages a lot.

Plus, the younger you are, the more a year seems like in proportion to ones life. As you get older, the range tends to widen and one isn't as affected by a small age difference.

Still, you're always a little leery of younger people because of all the differences in things to relate to. The most common peculiar aspect is that to young guys, everything seems new or interesting.

Its not bad, just sort of trying in conversation. Young guys can get so fascinated by so little so often. Its nice that they have enthusiasm, but a challenge sometimes.

I didn't mean to suggest it was pathological. Just that it would naturally be difficult emotionally and a stress on ethics. Even trying to be as honest and level-headed as you could, the stress and distraction would be more than I'd want to bear. A sign of maturity is the ability to place a job above sex, but its hard at any age, and since youth is attractive physically as an image of health and optimism, being bombarded with it constantly would just be too much.

That seems like a negative view of ones life and career choices. Its the nature of an athlete to withdraw over time with age. A gym teacher re-purposes their knowledge to help young men develop their bodies in a healthy way.

I wish I had better gym teachers and tried harder to get something from it. I was so bad I actually had to go to summer school for it.

Oddly, so did a lot of athletic kids. When the pressure was off from all of us being in a ridiculous situation, I actually learned how to enjoy team sports a bit.

There's nothing wrong with the job inherently but I've noticed over the years that my gym teachers were almost universally bitter, generally because they never got anywhere as an athlete. So they live vicariously through kids, except it's impossible because any real success an athlete has is usually the result of extracurricular work, not some gym teacher.
On the other hand, all my coaches have been, for the most part, great people with genuine passions for what they do. Maybe it's to do with the specialization, or maybe because they're the ones that actually deal with potential. No clue.

I wouldn't exactly call it inspiration. More like the man has seriously studied human thought and brain function and teaches how to streamline, tweak and correct obvious errors we can only partially see because we are literally living by errors as though it were part of us.

Just a little self discovery can go very far. You'd be surprised what you can learn about yourself that you may not have fully realized. Habits formed in youth are tremendously hard to detect because they are you. Getting the mind to look at itself is surprisingly difficult to hold for very long, so it helps to follow through stories of your past and ask 'why' once in a while.

It also teaches you about others and bolsters your empathy.

The incantation is just a phrase to stay focused on so your intellect doesnt trip some distracting emotion memory cycle or random drifting.

It can also be used for 'getting in state'; that is to say that it can be used for rhythm and timing, so the body is prepped by controlled breathing.

Robbins understands that the brain is biological, and you need to condition it to get the best use and access to your mind from a position of conscious control as opposed to the usual half-participating spectator to routines, habits and cycles that have probably been detached from evaluation for a while.

I do know what you mean I think, and would suggest you factor in basic job stress and the effects of age generally on a persons demeanor.

In my world, middle aged men come off as bitter generally. Living vicariously through youth is sort of the only emotional motivation, so I can forgive that; parents have to do it also.

I should also clarify that when you mentioned gym teachers, for some reason, I grouped coaches with that and was a bit confused.

Being a gym teacher generally seems like a strange job, both actively interesting and yet the classes I had always seemed to lack real structure, and I guess I resented it a bit. I never felt like I learned anything. If I didn't understand something, it felt foolish to ask for help around guys that already understood it.

I am curious to what your alternative is.

I like works by Robbins. That doesn't mean I have a library full of his books. I have a folder of his vids and mp3 series.

Just because self help is a business and they are most certainly sales-men doesn't mean you have to approach it as a religion. I have more books on Buddhism but Im not Buddhist. It just happens that Robbins works is very parallel to the teachings of sutras in a more modern context.

There is a habit of people throwing the baby out with the bathwater because they find some low quality shill. There are good an honest self help teachers just like there are serious and sincere televangelists. That some are frauds doesnt mean that all self help people are bullshitters just like some ministries are very pro-social.
