I have a strained relationship with my mother. She told me pretty dark stories of growing up with a alcoholic dad, how he beat up my grandma and gambled away all their money. She transferred this fear of money on to me.
She also kept warning me about how old men would rape me and that I had to be careful, when I was old enough to go to the city alone.

One Christmas my friends gave me a fat lady blow-up doll for some reason and it came with a vibrating egg or something.
Around those days she snooped a lot in my room and found the vibrating egg control thingy, when I came home that day she called me into the kitchen and said we needed to talk. She then told me what she had found and asked if I was gay and that there were many things she could accept but me being gay was not one of them.

Later in my twenties I tried having a deeper relationship with her then just talking about the weather etc. but she refuses to open up in any way. She is a neurotic neat freak, and I have found patterns in her way of thinking that I recognize in other females and it has always been off putting.

Socialism as a system is not something I'm a huge fan of. Like most other scandinavians I'm in favour of socialism (socialist ideas) within a capitalist system, ie the way Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden all work. Financing healthcare and education at all levels with taxes is the seemingly best way to pull people out of relative poverty and allow for the maximum amount of social and economical mobility; ie how to build a strong, unified nation. Ironically, Scandinavia is a better place for achieving the american dream (ie, becoming a dollar millionaire in liquid assets) than the actual United States of America. Free market and moderate government regulation is what it's all about; pure laissez faire is going a bit too far for my tastes.

Another issue about discussing socialism is how much disinformation's been spread about it and the way it's been applied in some of the "happiest" nations on earth. We're not socialists in Scandinavia, we're social democrats, social liberals (liberals as in liberalism, not the buzzword used by populist media). Like JS Mill said, it's about creating and maintaining the highest levels of happiness possible for the citizens without negatively affecting the happiness of others. How do we build a system that takes care of the poor without embittering the rich? I don't buy the idea that it only works for smaller nations either; if a nation has such a major problem with unemployment and poverty that it couldn't possibly support this kind of system, it has bigger issues to deal with. Issues that will not be magically solved by any ideology anytime soon.
