I live in upstate SC now, but I can't really say very much about my own experience here, as I'm not terribly sociable these days.
According to my brother (a high school teacher at a rural school) the kids are much more tolerant than the parents, there are open gays and couples in the school who are mostly accepted. Some mtf transkid near me was involved in a drivers license issue that was news for a while, she got the pic she wanted eventually.
There are plenty of Bible Belt types, but people here also have a "mind your own business" mentality, which makes up for it to some extent.
