Makes sense. Ironically enough, most of the chemistry grad students didn't wear lab coats, even though that's pretty much the place where you should be wearing them for your own safety. My supervisor never wore one, even when we had to cannulate a whole bottle of DIBAL-H (strong reducing agent, bursts into flame in contact with air) he was just wearing short sleeved shirts.

It's a matter of what chemicals you're working with and safety culture. The undergraduate bio labs were hilariously paranoid (wear a labcoat! That's 0.01M HCl! It's an acid!), and some of the shit that was going on in the research labs was kinda scary (handling pyrophoric chemicals and strong bases with no lab coat). As a general rule, chemists just don't seem to give a fuck, after a certain point you get desensitised to the danger of what you're handling every day.

I routinely stayed up until 2-3 AM in high school to help ease my depression and dysphoria, even though I had to wake up at 6 AM the next morning. It became so bad that I actually developed a sleep cycle that only allowed me 6 hours of sleep a night tops.
