like, someone who doesn't like being trans is going to eventually have enough surgery to make it seem like they were a girl their entire life, and they're not going to want to be representing anything other than females.

it actually started in the 70's, it was an OVA series of 110 episodes so it took a while to come out.
It's sort of permanent war, but it focuses as much or more on politics as it does on the actual war. I've heard some of the battles are based on historical ones, but it does good on having interesting strategies without going full animu (they present a certain sci-fi weapon and then use it in different ways 30 or 40 episodes later, each side has particular characteristics in the ship weapons that determine how they use it, no fight ends without major loses and you some time have inserts of people dying, lots of main characters die in logical scenarios and rarely in heroic ways)
I'd recommend watching 3 or 5 episodes and deciding if you like it. It's usually in the top recommendations for serious animu.

I don't think it's that polarized, you can be average looking and pass decently well pre-hrt or at least have visible basis for passing. Some faces just look obviously hopeless to ever pass 100% of the time and I'm pretty sure I'm in the latter group but just can't get honest opinions which is what this entire comment chain was about. Some minor fat redistribution won't be able to fix much I'm afraid.
