It's a pain in the ass, because most 4th-year law students already have an internship to deal with + have to start working on their TCC and study for exams, concursos and/or OAB. Anyway, my uni's legal practice center is 15km away from where I intern (JF) and kinda far from my uni, so lately I've been running around the city like a deranged person, trying to be on time for everything. To make things better, at JF, there have been countless hearings lately. I have to help the judges with them, write a bunch of reports on legal cases and work on sentences. I've been leaving the place every day at 7:30pm, which is completely ridiculous. I have no idea how I'll be able to keep up with my studies.

So, 4 months ago I was researching about deadlifts and squats (because /fit/ says they're the best thing ever), and after asking my physical therapist she told me I SHOULD do them because they would help me with my lumbar. So I've been doing them since then and I can say they are good exercises, they did help me a lot with my pain and my legs are getting joocy, which is a big plus.
That said, it's pretty clear to me that they are two particularly dangerous exercises, but not so much as to certainly injure yourself. If you have a good posture, adequate equipment, no incompatible back problems and don't push yourself too hard, nothing bad should happen.
I say you should give them a try. Begin with bodyweight, then do them holding dumbels, and after some time you may be comfortable with doing it with a barbell. Progress slowly, or just stop progressing after some time.
Just don't fall for the powerlifting autism, as you just mentioned.

It's interesting, really. When I met him, I did think he was a nice guy, but as I interacted more I noticed some strange things that convinced me not to try anything more than a hook up. For instance, he and his ex got a pug when they were together and they were sharing custody of it (each one would take care of the dog for a week). I don't really know why, but when he told me that I just thought that getting involved with him wasn't worth it, things were just too complicated and there was no chance it could ever go well for me.
