I started hormones in early-mid 2014 when I was nineteen years old and living in Sydney.

To summarize the physical/medical process:

1. I saw a private psychologist specializing in issues related to gender and sexuality. We had fortnightly sessions for close to four months before she referred me to an endocrinologist. I believe she was willing to do it earlier, but I had cold feet because of anxiety related to childhood trauma and high passing standards. The sessions were ~$150 per hour which I'm told is near the average rate. I'm not sure if there are any public doctors who do GD evaluations, but you could always call up the gender center and ask them.
2. I scheduled an appointment with the endocrinologist (Hayes), and he started me on 6 mg of oral estrogen the day I saw him ($10 for 56 2 mg pills). The waiting time for the appointment was around a month. I didn't have to wait for blood tests because I'd already had the relevant ones done for unrelated reasons a short while ago. The cost of the appointment was covered by medicare.
3. I then started laser hair removal on my face at an LCA clinic that was close by. I bought six sessions when they were on discount so they only cost $30 each. I never brought up being trans and nobody bothered me about it.
4. Went back to Hayes after a month with additional blood tests and he started me on synthetic progesterone ($10 for a month's worth) and Spironolactone ($10 for three month's worth).
5. A few months later we swapped the oral estrogen for sub-dermal pellets that I've been using since. They cost around $200 (out of pocket) and they last for six months.

I've always known I was trans, I just didn't label myself that way because of the stigma and a lack of knowledge. Throughout my teenage years I never considered transition to be an option because I thought it only involved something like being castrated and growing out your hair. One night I was clicking the random button on Reddit and I stumbled on transtimelines, started researching hormones and the rest is history.

My only real hurdle has been overcoming internalized transphobia and anxiety related to passing, which I haven't made a lot of progress with.

Coming out was horrible. My parents both have deep-seated emotional issues as well as high expectations, so telling them I was trans was like throwing water on boiling oil. I came out to my mother during a group session with the psychologist I mentioned above. She had a panic attack and walked out after several minutes in tears, and apparently almost attempted suicide. She then spent the next two weeks off work catatonic on sedatives. My father was very aggressive and angry and our discussion involved him yelling a lot and asking some rude and invasive questions. Sibling didn't want to talk about it but it was clear that they were angry and upset. Following the initial confrontation they became very emotionally (and occasionally physically) abusive. I left home several months later and have been living in government-subsidized housing and attending university. I have no contact with them and don't plan to reconcile ever.

I cut off contact with all my old friends and extended family after I started hormones with no explanation. I didn't have the emotional energy to face another fiasco after what happened with my family.

The only people who I've told that I'm trans have been professionals (doctors, case workers, etc.) and they've all treated it as a non-issue.

I don't present as female although I've definitely come a long way appearance-wise. My standards for passing are very high so I'll be waiting until I can get FFS (looking at Spiegel/Deschamps-Braly) and possibly VFS before I do that.

I've never experienced any overt transphobia outside of my family. I do get a few stares if I go out in a t-shirt and jeans, but I usually wear layers so that's not a problem.
