I did get the impression there was something to it, but that something isn't worth the inevitable brain damage that comes with continued LSD use. If you have an artistic personality and can live off that then it might serve your purposes better. For someone like me ( and most people I'd say ) it's not very good, and I think it should remain illegal for that reason.

Well, some of the stereotypes about tabletop gamers are definitely true. Generally speaking though I think the games have reached a degree of popularity with the rise of geek culture that its less of a problem than it used to be. There's still a lot of "that guy" type things, but that's to be expected.

Shit like a guy gets some bad rolls, freaks out, starts getting loud or passive aggressive ranting about how the game sucks or format sucks blah blah blah. Embarrassing but typically nonviolent and not exactly destructive.

Awkward social interactions abound even in the community. People not fully understanding social cues, but still overall people are friendly and informative. Good game store owners are basically professional autist herders and get all the retards to play nice. Girls are universally treated as these really neat things, sort of scared of them but highly interested in them - and the regular girls are treated highly respectfully, even if there is a lot of sexist jokes or material kicking around.

It's not as bad as some people make it out to be. It's just basically online gaming but in person, so online gaming without anonymity letting people be complete assholes.

It really depends on the game. Tabletop gaming is generally way more personal though. There will be a couple of freaks who don't want you touching their stuff, but most of the time people will go through their stuff/your stuff with you, showing you tips and tricks. If you play tabletop model games you're literally moving stuff around all the time, if you're playing card games like Magic the Gathering there's that, and all around they feature a buzzing social dynamic as far as gamers are concerned.

There's also a huge overlap in game stores with traditional board games, so if you like stuff like Risk, Settlers of Catan, etc its easy to get in on that.

It mostly depends on the game. I got into tabletop gaming with my best friend having no experience except Chess. The store and crowd were friendly and gave me pointers to get me along. Usually as long as you don't make a mess and you are a good customer stores won't mind you hanging around, doing stuff like painting, optimizing decks, talking etc. It's during the downtime between games and stuff that you'll have lots of time to just talk about gaming, pop culture, or have people show you specific techniques. Like I said before it all really depends on the store and the crowd. If you're playing tabletop games most stores have tables for you, even though you can play at home if you want. If you're into the console gaming scene then usually its a different store, more like a internet cafe, focusing primarily on Halo tournaments or Street Fighter/Tekken type stuff.

Typical say... Saturday if you're going to play 40k, you show up in the morning or early afternoon, hang out have some snacks paint some stuff, play some games, then go get lunch/dinner and come back to do it some more - or go home.
