That's society's fault. They're the ones that classified it as a mental illness and used that label to spread hatred and distrust through the media for decades. It's only natural that some trans people have internalized that hatred and are now pushing to remove themselves from the label altogether.

The push by western trans people attempting to have their condition either redefined or removed entirely from the DSM while redefining what it means to be a man/woman is a backlash after all those decades of marginalization, stigma and mistreatment. There are many factors that go into that if it's even true (I have very little proof anecdotal or otherwise one way or the other on that).
