>commander of the Czech Air Force would like to double the numbers of Saab 39 Gripens on lease from the Sweden
Would country the size of Czech Republic even need 28 Gripens for their defense? Or is such number actually enough?
Would it be better to wait until the current contract is over, and then get 30 Gripens E/F for good (as was originally intended)?
Or should Czechs rather look into F-35 for the future?
>>
>>35183422
>czechs buying f-35
not likely, they should stick to their order of clown aircraft
>>
>>35183422
>Would country the size of Czech Republic even need 28 Gripens for their defense

Size of defence forces isn't a 1:1 perfect scale to national geography or GDP. There are certain floors and ceilings internal to the force, like how many pilots can train, how many aircraft are down for maintenance, etc.

Tbh anything under 30 is too small for a nation that plans to run its own infrastructure.
>>
>>35183450
Don't underestimate the will of Czechs to waste absurd amount of money on stuff they don't even need.
Gotta drown these 2% somewhere.

>Or should Czechs rather look into F-35 for the future?

Wherever would they summon the money to do so? F-35s are outrageously expensive compared to their old MiGs and the new Gripens merely to purchase.
That is not including the enormous costs of maintenance and equipment for those things.

Heck, they can't even afford the Gripens, hence why they're merely using those lent air hours.
>>
>>35183422
There should be a sizeable amount of 39c being available from Sweden, and it's still a capable aircraft. Sounds like a good idea.
>>
>>35183422
Why not buy a few dozen FA-50s that way you have both an advanced trainer and a jet with speed and range necessary to cover your nations air space

>>35183463
40 jets would get you 2 squadrons plus a training unit and some spare air frames from accidents or cannibalization.
>>
>>35184134
>they can't even afford the Gripens

Czechs initally planned to buy 30 Gripens, under the government of current president Zeman, but after bribery scandal the number decreased, and in the end they only leased 14 for ten years. Currently the lease got extended for another twelve years. By then, there is option to either repeat the procedure with Gripen E/F, or actually buy these, or get the F-35.
In ten years the price of F-35 will also be somewhere else.
>>
>>35184217
>In ten years the price of F-35 will also be somewhere else.

The problem is not so much the initial price, but the infrastructure that goes along with it.
If it simply meant giving up a few fighters to get the absolute top of the line there is, everyone would do so.
The reality is nowhere near that simple.

Buying a plane is just the first step.
>>
>>35184547
Czechs would benefit of Gripen in case that Slovakia, Austria and Croatia (or even jet-less Slovenia) would adopt it, and Hungary retains it.
As for the F-35, the only benefit would be that Poland wants to get it, and Czechs might take the ride along.
>>
>>35184215
>FA-50
No compatibility with allied air forces whatsoever. At this point they might as well develop the Super Alca.

>Why not buy a few dozen FA-50s that way you have both an advanced trainer and a jet with speed and range necessary to cover your nations air space

FA-50 has lower performance than Gripen C/D or E/F. That is problem for T-50, by getting the best trainer currently around air forces might be shooting themselves in foot as it might give politicians silly ideas about also getting FA-50s. It is a fighter 3rd world countries.

In that case just buy f-16s it not like the Czech republic is ever going to go to war against someone by themselves anyway.

F-16 is older design than Gripen and it is going out of production pretty soon. If Czech will order F-16 now, they will be likely the last user of in NATO, when everyone else has upgraded to F-35 or some other more modern aircraft. Gripen E will be supported by producer for longer time with upgrades. Gripen and F-16 are roughly as capable planes, Gripen is lighter and cheaper to operate. F-16 has bit bigger payload and unrefueled range.

Also only user for latest block 60 version is UAE, their dictator might want to get newer and shinier toys at some point.

>F-16 is older design than Gripen and it is going out of production pretty soon.

The Gripens that Czechs are fielding is already out of production. It's literally the reason why Slovakia didn't get them as well. They opted to get a bunch of them on a lease as well,(like CR and Hungary) but the Swedes stopped production and shut down the lease program in the meantime, meaning they'd have to buy them whole and pay for the restarted production on top of that.

The leased ones are type C and D, both of which are no longer produced as Saab shifted to E, which is simply too expensive for any of the nations mentioned.
>>
>>35183422
They'd be better off buying the most recent block of F-16s, equivalent systems, cheaper flyaway cost, cheaper per flight hour, more range and better payload.
>>
>>35192801
For the price of the Gripen E you may as well buy F-35s. The only country's buying stuff like then Gripen E or Rafale are one's not allowed to buy F-35s and don't want slavshit su-27+++++++

The only 3 real options for Czech if they don't want to spend F-35 money is F-16, Gripen C or FA-50.
>>
>>35193183
>For the price of the Gripen E you may as well buy F-35s
Please show me the overall projected cost for the next 20 years if they buy F-35s versus Gripen. Please don't forget to include all new infrastructure, parts and training involved when switching to a completely new plane instead of upgrading to a newer iteration of your current jet.
Also don't forget to calculate the average flight time cost per hour for a small fleet and please don't cite any numbers from Lockheed PR papers or the USAF as they won't get the same conditions.

Oh, you can't provide those and just talk out of your ass? Thought so.
>>
>>35185263
Speaking of which, is there a possibility of german f-35 in the future?
>>
>>35183422
Also because of public opinion and possibly the influence of an unspecified eastern country, there would probably be a lot of public pressure against the F-35, if that can mean anything.
>>
>>35193183
Yeah, instead of getting one Grippen you can get 1/3 of a F-35!
>>
>>35193576
> Changes from the JAS 39C/D include the more powerful F414G engine, Raven ES-05 AESA radar, increased fuel capacity and payload, two additional hardpoints, and other improvements.[62][63] These improvements have reportedly increased the Gripen NG costs to an estimated 24,000 Swiss Francs (US$27,000) per hour,[349] and increased the flyaway cost to 100 million Swiss Francs (US$113M).[350]
>>
>>35193635
Pretty smart move by the Swedes. They are still able to sell low-cost versions but now also have high-quality versions for countries with more money to spend/want to produce an elite squadron within their air force.

By that logic everyone who currently flies the Hornet should upgrade to the Super Hornet. Which is ridiculous.
>>
>>35194259
I did not imply that at all. What I find aggravating, especially in /k/ threads about jet fighter procurement, are the ridiculous numbers permanently thrown around.
People compare pure production costs of F-35s with overall system costs or numbers taken out of some life cycle calculations without source or context.
It really doesn't matter if e.g. the per plane cost is slightly higher for a Gripen or Rafale (due to lower numbers) if most of the money spent creates jobs in your own country.
>>
>>35194242
Because maintaining twin engine in such airspace is simply not worth it. Even Swiss wants to replace theirs with something else.
