Would a glock 42, or LEO trade in 22, or 21 be a good choice for a new(ish) shooter to get into centerfire handguns if they planned to shoot a ton?

Get the 22. You can convert it to 9mm too if you want and have a Glock 17 as well
>>
>>35181465
>glock 42
no tiny ccw guns have a much higher learning curve compared to fullsize
>glock 22
decent choice 17 would be better but 40s not that horrible of a choice
>>
>>35181719
I've heard that .40 kicks hard and wears out guns much faster than .45 and 9, and the only reason I'm choosing from those 3 options over a 17 is budget.
>>
>>35181465
42 is more of a carry gun. Not the easiest to shoot.
22 is alright. Good deals out there and you can get 9mm barrel conversions.
21 is pretty good too but ammo cost can be an issue. Also thick grips due to double stacked .45 and since the frame is light recoil will be an issue.

Between the three I'd recommend a nice cheap used 22.
>>35181719
It'll still be a model 22, just one that happens to shoot 9mm instead of .40S&W.
>>
>>35181465
Someone's been looking at Aimsurplus...

A 9mm starting off is ideal. If you're really set on the 22, get a 17 instead. The ammo will be cheaper, the gun will be more soft shooting and the 17 is plain reliable. The only .40 Glock I'd ever buy is a 35, period.

The 42 is actually very shootable but still not a good option for a new shooter, I agree.
>>
>>35181747
lets say you save 50 bucks buying a 40 over a 9
the second you buy a thousand rounds of 40 that price difference is gone. with youre second thousand rounds now its costing more for the same amount of bullets. if you want a 9 get the 9.

It has snappy recoil, it isn't hard or painful just alot of muzzle flip
>>35181754
The slide will day 22 but for all purposes it is a Glock 17, but even toastier with the slightly thicker frame/barrel. 9mm extractor/ejector/mag make the conversion 100%
>>
>>35181747
It does kick more but not as much as .45, it does also accelerate wear but by a negligible margin. You'd have to shoot tens of thousands of rounds to see any difference.

You are mostly losing in added ammo cost and decreased magazine capacity. Also slightly more recoil, but women don't seem to have any trouble with it so you should be fine.

And again, 9mm conversion barrels are like $120. I have one on my Glock 23.
>>
>>35181786
I had another question. Most .40 ammo I've seen has a flat nose, is that standard? If so, does it affect accuracy?
>>
>>35181818
>is that standard?

It is

>does it affect accuracy

nope

I own a couple of Glock 22 and a 23. .40S&W is a bit more expensive than 9mm but its worth having one around for when there are panics and a run on ammunition. Even during the deepest darkest days of post-Sandy Hook there was plenty of .40 to go around. Its the only bulk handgun ammunition I can even remember being on the shelves at the time.

Or you can go 10mm.
>>
>>35181945
Yeah but isn't it about to start dying as LEOs move back to 9mm?
>>
>>35182006
That will take a while. And again... 9mm conversion barrels.
>>
>>35182006
Not really, it's still very popular for a carry round and used in USPSA and other pistol matches
>>
>>35182995
Why would someone choose a .40 for competition over 9mm or .45?
>>
>>35183120
9mm puts you minor power factor while .40 can bump you up to major power factor, shooting a lighter bullet than .45, with more capacity. Plus with a .40 you can switch back and forth from 9 to .40, which I'd what I do with a Glock 35
>>
>>35181465
None of those are good choices.
the maintenance people hate the 42 and .380 is shitty. its also tiny as fuck
the 22 is going to suck because FOTAY is snappy and expensive
the 21 is going to be a fucking brick and shoot realy expensive ammo.

I would reccomend a ruger mk4 or 22/45 lite.
its a cheap gun you can drop affordable trigger upgrades in and shoot cheaply. They also look realy cool, are very light and dont have a lot of recoil
>>
>>35183120
probably knocks steel over a little more reliably
>>
>>35183658
Mostly steel poppers so 9mm does the job fine. Now bowling pins however, on a table, 9mm doesn't much cut it
