I never understood all the hate for .40 s&w. There isn't really a noticeable difference in recoil for me, there isn't as big of a difference in capacity unlike .45, ammo is definitely cheaper than .45 and not too much more than 9mm, and it does preform marginally better than 9mm especially against barriers and bones. The most valid criticism that I've seen is that it can wear down some guns faster. That being said, I still prefer 9mm.

I don't like 40 S&W but I would still buy one if the price was right. Hell, I don't "love" a lot of guns but guns are tools and sometimes there is a perfect tool for the job.

Last weekend I picked up a G27 police trade in. It has a just trace of holster wear but looks almost new and has the case, a mag and night sights. I got it for under 300 bucks with some coupons at Cabelas. Seriously, 40S&W LEO trade in Glocks are a dime a dozen online too.

Now, I have many handguns and I don't carry 40. That said, there were reasons I picked it up.

1. It was cheap.
2. I have another caliber that I can play with because guns are fun.
3. LWD has 40-357 Sig conversion barrels for under $75 shipped right now.
4. I just picked up a nice 9-40 conversion barrel for it. It is a G26 after also changing the extractor, ejector and plunger for the extractor. These parts are cheap and I have many extras.
5. More parts. I have 3 G26s.
6. Ammo shortages. After sandy hook, 40 was the last major centerfire caliber to go and the first to come back.
7. Local cops shoot it out of their M&Ps. Brass is literally everywhere. Many cops own 40s. From a survivalist mindset, this is a big one.

The problem is that some people tout .40 S&W as the end all be all cartridge. At the time it was much better than most 9mm offerings on the market. One of the reasons I don't like it is that some of the platforms (Glocks) that I like can be a bit sketchy to reload for. I'm talking about the need for a generous feed ramp and the (relatively) unsupported chamber in Glocks.

Now, it you shoot something else, cool. Just about every other platform in 40 tends to suck for my purposes.

Yes, people do reload for 40 cal Glocks but a lot of the power of the cartridge (compared to 9mm) comes from the last 20% of power that it tries to eek out in its higher loadings. The brass works great once, maybe twice but starts to weaken around the case head and bulge. There are workarounds, sure. There are aftermarket barrels, bulge busting dies, etc. Ultimately, the cost of shooting the caliber goes up for someone trying to spend time at the range and less money on new ammo/components.

I literally shovel 9mm brass into a bucket at my range and I only ever had one or two cases split on me in 10 years of reloading. The gun (G17) was fine. I'm not counting my chickens when it comes to 40 cal glocks. See: KaBoom.

I'm not saying the cartridge is bad. It just has some caveats for a lot of people, including me. I'm rocking some reloads right now in my G26 that are very hot 9mm with the Lehigh Defense Xtreme Defender 90gr solid copper projectiles. They clocked at over 1400fps and the ballistics seem very good. I just don't see the need to stick with a 40 unless I want to make a 357 SIG conversion. ;)

I don't get it....10mm is what I carry and shoot all the time and it has never seemed like too much recoil. The difference between it and 9mm to me is so slight. I can't detect if follow up shots are slower at all. So why be a pussy?
