Australia's military history seems to just be a hodgepodge of failures and us and the burgers using them for cannon fodder and "look other countries support us!" propaganda. The only thing the aussie military seem to have going for them is the cool hats or have they actually contributed something of significance in the last 120 years?
>>35163259
You mean like the Kokoda Trail or the Siege of Tobruk?
>>35163259
;D
whaddabout that heckler and kooch stuff eh?
emu war
>>35163286
>cannon fodder
>>35163307
They kicked ass in those battles.
In Vietnam they had an easier time with their FALs than the jamomatic M16s the Americans had. In the middle east, Australian troops are known for having more enthusiasm than canadians or the french when it comes to fighting radical muslims.

Did any of that actually change the end results though?
>>35163259
I'm pretty sure the Brits were glad of the manpower, seeing as how they lacked for men in both World Wars. And the presence of a friendly power in the Asia Pacific was helpful for US goals during the Cold War.

Litteral who battles.

As I said, cannon fodder.

Explain?
>>35163259
Go read a book nigger
>>35163351
>cannon fodder
Even with the Australian contribution, the British couldn't afford to treat any of their soldiers, Commonwealth or otherwise, as cannon fodder, so that's bullshit.
>>35163259
>just be a hodgepodge of failures a
Only Gallipoli really other than that they have preformed admirably everywhere they have fought.
Sure they were never a world power but they hit above their weight like the New Zealanders did when it came to contributing.
Kind of like Poland but with better geography and less betrayal
>The only thing the aussie military seem to have going for them is the cool hats or have they actually contributed something of significance in the last 120 years?
They provided ready acclimatised soldiers for British Empire for their African and Middle Eastern Campaigns.
+ some cool things like

>>35163332
Possibly. They held their line well in Vietnam. I haven't heard of any major screw ups there on the level of Gallipoli. As for Aphganistan, Australian soldiers tended to pursue taliban that attacked them instead of retreating or holding ground. More so than, say, the french (I heard this in an anonymous interview on TV). This apparently resulted in the australian soldiers getting attacked less often.

Shoo shoo you slimey limey
I'd rather work with all the shitposters in australia than some pretentious tea drinking faggot.
Australian military lost a war against Emus. These stupid flightless birds.

they were top tier jungle warfighters in new guinea. held down hundreds of thousands of japanese troops there and stopped them from getting a foothold right above the largest staging ground into the south pacific. pissed the Japanese off something fierce as they were crazy enough to pull m3 stuarts through the new guinea jungle surprising the japs and their american comrades who thought it would be impossible to deploy armor in the thick jungle.

>British couldn't afford to treat any of their soldiers as cannon fodder
Hahahahaha
>>35163347
Confirmed for knowing nothing about the North African Campaign.
Rommel overstretched his supply lines while he drives the Allies across North Africa. Tobruk was the port for moving into the Suez, and one of the few in Libya. The Australians stuck Rommel there for 2/3rds of a year, and inflicted 2:1 casualties despite almost non-existent supplies and Rommel encircling the city.
Jesus christ, I'm American and even I know this shit.
>>35163259
They and New Zealand provided more in reverse lend lease than they took in the latter years of WW2, mostly through food stuffs as they essentially fed all the allies in the pacific.
>>35163430
d-delete this

>surprising the japs and their american comrades who thought it would be impossible to deploy armor in the thick jungle.
Everyone used armor in the thick jungle.
"If I had to take hell, I would use the Australians to take it and the New Zealanders to hold it." -Erwin Rommel.
>>35163259
Dude, Australia has fought side by side with America in almost every war they have been in.
>>35163347
The aussies actually fought very well. One of our better allies.
>>35163332
No amount of well running rifles could have changed the fact that the American congress abandoned the Paris Peace Accords and let the South get taken over. Politics, evidently, is a deadlier weapon that the gun.

For a small country in the middle of nowhere we have punched above our weight in every conflict around the world.
Consistently had low funding for our military and never had conscription.
Always turned up to help the US in every conflict since we signed the ANZUS treaty.

Served in Iraq as POG, occasionally ran in to Aussie dudes, they seemed like squared away solid guys. They don't need to go out and play world police because they are happy being left alone on their giant island.
Canadian soldier reporting in.
Aussies in Afghan were tough as fuck. Always willing to pick a fight. Can't say that about too many other nations.
>>35168746
Both fucking disasters...all for the better.
However, Iraq Isis edition, Canada is fighting and killing.

That's not a high bar to set m8. It's literally the military equivalent of placing third in the special olympics.

We do a lot of regional stability and anti piracy ops in the south pacific which probably matters to the people of the south pacific. For a military on half the size of the USMC we do alright.
