What knife / Multi-tool does /k/ carry?
>>35161476
>multi-tool
>not just opening/prying things open with your bare hands.
>>35161476

I like the DEUS VULT grips, but I kinda wish kek steel made a version with wood grips.

>>35161476
Bought a Victorinox SwissTool about a decade ago, and still use it for work. Getting pretty beat up at this point, though. I might splurge for a Multitasker or whatever.
For the people that carry around a multi-tool, do you carry it in your pocket or the sheath/pouch you get?
>For stuff at home: Leatherman Surge
>In the car: Leatherman Wingman
>For travel: Gerber MP600 bladeless
>Keychain: Leatherman Style CS
>Keychain while traveling: Leatherman Style PS
My EDC includes a Skeletool.
I didn't like the half serrated blade it came with, so I replaced it with a plain edge I found on eBay. It's made out of 154CM which is a top tier blade steel.
>>35161701
Usually sheath because I keep all my different bits in there.
>>35161893
>154CM
>top tier
thats not how you spell m4
>>35162083
>non-stainless EDC blade
Stop this.
>>35161476
I'm very fond of swiss army knives and often times do find them extraordinarily useful.
>>35161476
That, actually. Feels nice, I've got the bit kit for fixing small things in my apartment, although it feels like the knife can't hold an edge well. Maybe I just need to learn to sharpen it properly. I don't have a gun to use the pin punch on, but the scraper and wood saw come in handy for all sorts of weird shit.
>>35162032
You just reminded me that I lost my sheath when I moved with all my bits.
>>35161476
Leatherman charge usually slipped into my pocket. Just got it replaced by leatherman after grinding the tip of the blade off by accident. Been meaning to get a wave as a backup.
If I want a knife to carry, either a cheap Kershaw cryo that I have 4 of, or a benchmark nakamura.
just got this in earlier this week and its been great
>>35161893
used to be top tier. Its still great steel, like vg10 is and i love me some vg10.
Theyve made a powdered version of 154cm called CPM 154 which is better and more in line with top tier. So good news for the 154cm lovers.
Is CoS steel good? And is it hard to sharpen?
>>35161476
A basic swiss army knife.
It's about the size of a tinker or spartan but instead of scissors or a saw, it has a nail file.
Basically I use it as a letter opener, bottle opener beer/wine and a basic hygiene tool with the file, tool pick and tweezers.
I use a larger benchmade auto knife for box cutting general use and self defense.
>>35162740
any knife is great if you don't use it for anything
>>35161701
Depends on size. Full size one a sheath or clipped on I remember the old blast full size being thin enough to fit in that small third pocket in my blue jeans. The new ones are bulkier
>>35162788
litterally brand new monday so it may be shoking that it looks pretty fresh. My bad ill drag it behind the car on my way to work. I forgot it had a lanyard hole.
>>35162793
you don't intend to use it for anything. You bought it to take pretty pictures of it and pretend you belong to some form of social circle
>>35162804
nah man, if they dont get used then they end up getting sold. Got one and maybe one more that are going that way.
And if someone doesnt use their knife so what? their money. Also they are a great way to pick up a NIB or LNIB knife for less.
>>35162828
its extremely common for people to collect tools they will never use. Its the human condition

yep and while on one hand i dont get it, they offer that opportunity to buy at a good price and if i dont use the knife or dont like it ill sell it for what i paid and i dont loose money.
i wont pay the asking price for say a SB delica or the spyderco lum tanto. Id like them but oh well.

MUTs are only really good for AR-15 maintenance. Get a better multitool for day-to-day use, like a SOG PowerAssist or a Leatherman Wave.
>>35162884
barely even this though. Ive had a mut since it came out and only really use the bronze scraper and pin punch.
also i'm tired of having to bend it back into shape because some fucking retard who borrows it tries to use it as a pry bar. It looks like bronze, smells like bronze, tastes like bronze but it must be fucking steel guys
>>35162248
I'd ask you what'd you use for CQC since you're not pulling that knife out quickly for such a situation.
But then I see you have one of the best CQC weapons out there. But a shrouded hammer would have been better though.
Nonetheless try to get something like a Delica Wave 4 and put it in your left pocket. If your right side becomes busy while being attacked you might not be able to use it to draw. That's when you pull out the GTFO me knife
>>35162863
Actually anon I laughed at your joke
So I'm fucking around sharpening a kabar. I stropped it a bunch and it seemed like it actually got less sharp.
I watched a Steel Drake clip, but only one, and he mentioned over-stropping is a thing on this steel?
I've since sharpened it on some lanksy rods and I can see a fair few reflections off the edge but it seems like it might be sharper now than when I stopped a bunch.
Mind you my ability to test that is as green as my ability to sharpen.
>>35163038
I'm here all week
>>35161684
I had one for about 6 years. No scissors on mine tho.
Stolen by some shiftless cunt from my nailbag when I was out picking up an order.

Fuck.
>>35163027
Thanks for the advice. I have a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 that I use to pick gum off my boots and cut hard sheets of plastic, but I would never carry that big ole' waste of pocket space. Some of us (who may practice certain disciplines) "want" to fight in an elevator, and are less afraid (if not fully in favor of) being so close to a guy that neither of us can draw. I do not like folding knives for self defense, but I do often carry a fixed blade which was not pictured above. About the hammer, my training and experience may be different from yours, and so the hammer is an advantage, whereas for you it may be a drawback (no pun intended.)

Kershaw Splinter.
Can any anons recommend a good beginner lestherman if such a thing? I've been trying to put together a decent "oh shit another hurricane" bag and think it's time I got a multi tool. Also wanted it to be compact enough for edc maybe. Liked the MUT(have an AR guess I could use it on), Wave or Signal. Ideas?

ayyy fellow 0351 how goes things? I was an 0351 in 3/8 from 2008-12. Whats the news on the newest iteration of the SMAW? That was a big rumor going around when I was stil in, but I havent seen much about it since.
As far as the thread, I used a Leatherman wave my entire enlistment and still use one(different one unfortunately, I lost my original at a work site sadly)
>>35165733
Bro Im sorry but when never got the SMAW II, which is funny cause my seniors were saying the same thing. Actually one blew up in ITB awhile back so they pulled em all. I heard the assaultmen coming through ITB dont even get hands on the SMAW anymore

I dont believe that. What about your boots?

My boots were trained on the SMAW, But my boots boots evidently not. And before I fapped we didnt even use the SMAW for 03XX just demo. Maybe we'll finally get replaced with Combat Engineers

The Wave is a classic Leatherman.
If you're looking just for a decent cheap one, you can get a Leatherman Wingman for around $25 from most of the big hardware stores.
>>35167335
>The Wave is a classic Leatherman.
Thanks. I'm down to spend a little if it's quality which i'm seeing Leatherman makes good stuff and their warranty is quite nice also.
Sure neither one qualifies as gucci shit, but if the multi tool was good enough for my granddad it's good enough for me, and I've had no complaints with the tech skin so far.

Leatherman Signal
>>35167750
How do you like it? I think i'm stuck between that and the MUT.
>>35167768
The blades are noticeably thicker then my other multitools and it has replaceable cutters in the plyer and it has a sharpener that comes off super easy. My wave has a sharpener but it's attached to the knife and can't be used to sharpen itself, which is kinda odd.
>>35167835
Thanks for the comparison pic.
>it has replaceable cutters in the plyer
Interesting you can replace the cutters, didn't know that. I felt like the sharpener was a gimmick thing when I was reading about it, does it legit work do you feel?
>>35161476
>>35167869
>I felt like the sharpener was a gimmick thing when I was reading about it, does it legit work do you feel?
I think it would work in an emergency. It's supposedly diamond coated but I have a worksharp so I sharpen that way.
>>35168014
I have the Ken Onion Worksharp. Works well, but I only use it when a knife has a serious chip in it. Plus I find that it can be all too easy to mangle the tip.
I use Japanese waterstones which leave a beautiful satin bevel. From that point it just takes a few swipes on a strop loaded with chromium oxide to bring it to shaving sharp.
>>35168014
>>35168324
Appreciate the info, anon.
>>35168324
You forgot to say "in my opinion" I've tried them all and nothing beats a Worksharp. Especially when you get finer belts.
>>35168394
Both the Wicked Edge (+its higher quality knockoffs) and Tormek system blow the worksharp out of the water.
Plus they won't mess with your steel.
>>35161476
Leatherman Charge
>>35168871
or Leatherman Juice S2 (the original of course)
>>35167750
whats up Sparky?
>>35164636
So BJJ/Judo? Me too man. I do BJJ but with friends. Judo I actually go to a gym and practice.
I always look at it from a multiple opponents with weapons scenario though. As good as grappling as we might have, multiple guys, armed with guns or knives is a losing proposition so I carry a quickly deployable blade for worst case scenario.
In regards to the hammer on a revolver, don't get me wrong I prefer a hammer, especially for long range shots, but I feel it might snag.
Have you seen the ones with the semi shrouded hammer? You can still cock it into single action, but it wont get snagged either.
Best of both worlds but looks ugly.

If they had replaceable cutter teeth the pliers would be the best. But the knives and such are so flimsy.

>tfw have been buying 1095 folders and afraid to use them
Instead of giving in for a Leatherman, I grabbed the Gerber Suspension for 20 bucks, figured I'd find out over time what tools I actually need on these things vs what is pointless. It has been holding up pretty well, I have no complaints. If it breaks I'll get a Leatherman but I wanna see how far this will go.
Backstory first. I run a hardware store and am type I diabetic. Insulin pump and CBGM hang on right side of belt. Leatherman Wave and Streamlight Protac AA hang on left side. The light I've only had about 6 months but wanted/needed something better than the cell phone flashlight. The Wave I've carried for about 4 years. I use both quite often.
