If you want an antique gun, then yes. If you want a gun regardless of historicity, then you can get really good deals on modern shotties: https://www.cdnnsports.com/firearms.html#category_2=FIREARMS%2FSHOTGUNS&price_sale=149,400
>>
>>35159960
find out if it's a repo or not. that serial makes me think it is. it's a decent price for a repo, and a fucking steal if it's not.
>>
>>35160066
I wouldnt say its a steal. Mine was only $350 for an original.
Its not an awful price though
>>
>>35159960

That is a takedown model, There is a pin in the end of the magazine tube that you can pop out, rotate the magazine tube and the barrel and mag tube will twist off from the receiver. Pretty neat!

i hate auto correct.

was yours made in 1897 or after?

Great deal for an 1897, jump on it.
Here's an ancient pic of my free 16ga 1897 field model from 1917.
>>
>>35160066

I haven't seen or heard of anyone making repros of the takedown version of this gun, there's just too much detailed machining on these to be worth it.
>>
>>35160008
Well, I'm thinking It could be a home defense gun, since I only own a ruger 10/22. Parents don't like guns much so they didn't take me often. Since I got a job now, I plan on getting better things but this is a nice holdover. Also rare.
>>
>>35160117
That's fascinating.

I love mine.
>>
>>35160137
For HD no, just no. Get a newer shotgun, not something like an 1897. Think of it from the mindset of "do I really want to see this gun sitting in police lockup with idiots moving it around and scratching it?" I guess that depends on where you're from though, that's just my $.02 on that.
>>
>>35160137
feels underage man?
>>
>>35160137

For home defense I'd get a Mossberg 500, the 1897s have a problem where if you short stroke it two shells can get jammed into the lifter and it takes some amount of fiddling and tools to undo it, would definitely put it out of action. You can usually get a 500 for around $200 most places.
>>
>>35160117
OP Here, it was apparently made in 1912 by using that pdf.
>>
>>35160066
It's an original 1913 production 1897 Takedown, that's a hell of a good price for the condition it appears to be in.
>>
>>35160168
Yeah, I know the risks of using it as a main HD, but I don't really care so much since I'm good friends with my local law enforcement agency anyhow. Also I'm 18 now since April, tiny wrists.

Good friends at your local law enforcement agency won't be able to help you with this.
>>
>>35160308
tightening a few screws will though.
>>
>>35160308
I'm going to shoot it often so I know how to overcome that, and fucking give it a good cleaning aswell. It's funny because when I got the .22lr my parents were extremely uncomfortable even though I had it bolt locked and in a safe.

>>35160347

Well, I have both an 1897 and a Mossberg 500, I've shot both extensively, I know which one I'm grabbing to use against criminals.

The 1897 is a cool gun but seriously, get something more reliable for home defense as soon as you can.
>>
I have a 1906 takedown 1897, paid $200 dollary doos for it. Not in perfect cosmetic condition but it does function.

>>35160192

Your takedown pretty loose too? My shit likes to wobble some, read it's common with guns that were used hard. A lot of the old timers would braze or silver solder the shit converting it from a takedown to a traditional 1897 but obviously that's not smart in today's market. It's still very usable but can be a pain in the ass to reassemble and get it to stay secure at times.
>>
>>35160452
OP here

I understand the need to get something better, I plan on getting a CZ p01 Compact and having my uncle sign the ffl, and I'll be in possession of it. He's the only other gun guy in the family.
>>
>>35160473

if I recall correctly think there is an adjustment for the rotation of the threads on the barrel side of the takedown mechanism. there is a wedge block with a screw in it that you can undo, once that is undone the threads on the barrel will rotate freely and can be adjusted, just be sure to lock it back down once you're done. The mechanism honestly some of the coolest shit I've seen.
>>
>>35160507

Nice to know. I'll have to look at that and see if I can rectify the problem a bit. Gun was a consignment at a LGS a while back; guy's grandfather died and he wanted something more "tactical" so they did a consignment sale. I seen it for $200 and just bought that shit instantly.
>>
>>35160504

Don't do this, you should convince your uncle to buy it for you as a gift. Otherwise he'd be making a straw man purchase.
>>
>>35160523
"Hey uncle, I'm going to give you this here $550 so you can gift me a handgun to circumvent the age laws"

My dad doesn't care as much as my mom, so I'd have a better chance convincing him, but uncle is plan B.
>>
>>35160522

What a damned shame, I heard a guy working behind a gun counter one time say he sold his recently deceased granddad's Ruger Old Army for something that wasn't black powder. Maybe I'm just sentimental.
>>
Guys, can I legally pay for a handgun online like gunbroker / buds and have a family member sign off the ffl? I don't want to turn anyone into felons because of >>35160561
>>
It's an original, the blueing is a give-away, they don't use the same method any more. I've owned two in 12 GA, check to see if it is 2 3/" chamber and not the old 2 5/8s". I had a 1897 head space ring break on me once and had to turn a replacement on a lathe so be aware that parts break.
>>
>>35160678
It was #4 buck 2 3/4" shell. Shot fine. Ejected well.
>>
>>35160663

IIRC your family member can pay for it and then give it to you as a gift, that's about the only option as far as federal law is concerned. Also check your state laws.
>>
>>35160745
Washington state, no handgun anything laws other than 21 to purchase.
>>
>>35160663
The 4473 form already has a question about this specifically, number 11 section a.

https://www.atf.gov/file/61446/download

Hint: If you pay for the handgun whether you pay for it online or you pay someone else who buys it then you are the actual purchaser.
>>
>>35160803
Well fuck me, I'm winning a bid for the CZ.
>>
I don't suppose there's a way to fix that I broke right? I mean, I don't exactly want a felon.
>>
>>35161539
You can resell it before taking piston possession (basically having your FFL A PUT put it on his shelf) or work with the seller to get a refund.

Most likely you're going to lose money.

Sorry dude.
>>
>>35161725
The FFL I planned on shipping it to is a gun range within walking distance. I know the guy, maybe he'll keep it for me till I'm of age. Or it pans out with my dad. Since I did pay for the gun to begin with.
