If these things were legal, would you carry one? I think they're actually more awkward to open than most assisted opening folding knives.
>>
>>35158735
>assisted opening folding knives
I would stick with this. Kershaw """""""assisted"""""" is the bees knees for opening one handed.
However my experience has been colored by the only switchblades I've handled having been flea market specials.
>>
They are legal, dipshit. Unless you're in a cuck state.

They are legal, and I did own one. They're dangerous because the lock always fails.

I do have a sort-of switchblade, I guess you could say.
>>
>>35158735

>legal in my state
>I carry one occasionally
>scares non-knife people
>barely faster to deploy than a normal knife with a decent pivot
>way slower to put the blade away, unless OTF

I also carry OTF's, but that's rare. They scare the shit out of people, and you get tired of being told "those are illegal" by people who don't know what they're talking about.

My auto knives:

>Benchmade
>9501 AFOII

Carried the most out of my autos. Great for fishing and gutting animals. Has never failed to open.

>3300 Infidel

Useless double-edged chisel-cut blade, overly complex internals that get defeated by pocket lint.

>3550

Small, so I take it skiing and on the motorcycle.

>4600

Small blade, thick grind, "meh" steel, occasionally fails to retract if held upside down. Never carry it.

>Microtech Ultratech

Better than any OTF made by Benchmade, still "meh" for how much room it takes up in the pocket. Also, Dem proprietary screws.
>>
>>35158735
Legal where I'm at. I carried one in high school but stopped when I realized they suck.
>>
>>35158735
No, I have a leatherman and in my daily routine I find myself opening cans of peaches more often than stabbing people. Not that there aren't people that need stabbing, but I don't work with them.
>>
so can a switchblade just fail and open up in your pocket and stab you or break through the pocket or does it not open with enough force to do anything
>>
switchblades are a broadway and hollywood meme knife
>Too small
>Lock always breaks
>illegal in some places
Any standard folding knife is better
>>
>>35159778
I mean carrying a knife in general (for a primarily self defense reasons non utility) is pretty fuckin stupid hollywood stuff

>>
I have a benchmade 3550 I have carried alot. It's elegant as fuck but offers no real advantage to a decent folder, all while having the distinct disadvantage of legal complications.

Some states have no regs on them, but many do including mine. In iowa they are considered a "dangerous weapon" and can only be carried by a ccw holder. So I am fine, but other states may not honor that arrangement.
>>
>>35158735
I've found that a good flipper knife is just as good as an automatic knife and has less things that can fail like springs
>>
In michigan the governor just passed a law making them legal.
>>
>>35159593
.................
>>
>>35158735
Good ones cost a shitload but you still have to chunk them in a river if you ever use them. You can open most modern folders very quickly with one hand anyway.
>>

Thank god I have been carrying one for years and just realized I couldn't a week ago.

Why are people afraid of switchblades? Aren't they flimsy as fuck? They just look "more" dangerous than a bowie knife.
>>
>>35162931
I got mine on sale for $30. :^)

It's probably my favorite knife now. I thought it was just going to be a toy to play with and then forget. A couple days later I'm up on a ladder and need to cut something. I was able to open and close it with only my thumb. I carry it everywhere and I'm currently saving for a Microtech of some sort.
>>
>>35162949
I used to buy those for about $13 all the time, really not worth the hassle most the time.
>>
>>35162949
>open and close it with only my thumb
literally a feature on every half decent $5 knife you can find
>>
>>35162964
Without having to disengage a lock or press the back of the blade against anything. It also keeps your fingers clear of the blade entirely.
>>
>>35162964
lol, do you even fix blade?
>>
>>35162978
folding blades are easier to carry and therefore more versatile

>>35162975
there are plenty of locks you can disengage with one hand in a swift motion. they barely take any practice. also there are knives that don't use locks as well

for example this knife you just press the tab on the back
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/kershaw-intellect

this knife you just flick you thumb forward
http://www.leatherman.com/crater-c33-26.html

there are plenty of knives out there. that mechanism looks like a shitty box cutter. Especially for $30

Yeah, I own quite a few knives of various sorts. I only have four with me at the moment. Clockwise starting from the bottom is a Glock 78, CRKT Squid (a gift), Taiwan Lightning, and a Buck 315. The Buck 315 is interesting because the blade is a slip joint and the marlin spike is actually a lever lock.

None of other knives I own (including the ones in the picture) match the ease of a double-action OTF in a situation where you only have the use of one hand. It's not something that can be understood until you use one.

You can own a switch blade in Cali as long as the blade length is under 2", which is sadly better than PA which out right bans them.
>>
>>35158735
>If these things were legal, would you carry one?

they are legal here, and I wouldn't. Or I don't, as I actually do own one. They are inconvenient to use, with awkward geometry for actually cutting things.

They were always garbage utility blades which is why they were sold after the war as farm tools. If GIs hadn't made them popular we could have avoided a lot of bureaucratic bullshit. Now that modern folders are around they are obsolete.

They are pretty much the next generation of Kershaw, cheap but reliable. The Espada XL is an exception because it's pretty expensive. But again, the quality is there. Also, it's kind of got it's own niche in the folders market... There aren't any other 7.5" "tactical folders."

>If these things were legal

But anon, they are legal.

Anyway, no. I used to carry an assisted opener, but all the auto openers I've handled seemed kind of prone to breakage. Now I carry an Al-Mar SERE 2000. No assist, liner lock, everything you need.
>>
>>35163917
please reconsider... I bought my gerber propel AO in september 2016. Had to return it once, because one set of serrations was fucked up. Second one failed on me 8 months later. The spring exploded into my hand, while I was opening it. Without my gloves I would have bled like a pig.

Short version, housewives got that scary thing the teens all had banned because of WestSide Story gangs. Some woman wrote a shock article about street toughs with stilettos in a ladies home journal. It's like the Reefer Madness of knives, busybodies bug congressmen and ruin x thing for 3 generations. You think we would ignore them after the Prohibition disaster and the Temperance movement.

I carry a stilletto replica in one of my vests just because it's fuckhuge and scary. Intimidation is its only saving grace, other than that it's a huge hunk of shit.
