Its funny you mention that. A few months ago, i decided to take a mag and do just that. I tried using the gel kleen strip (which is pretty strong) and its only took off about 20% of the paint. Repeated attempts on and off and the paint still wont come off. Last week, i decided fuck it, and went at it with 230grit sandpaper. I got it down to bare plastic but theres sti paint left. Ill probably spray the mag with some clear coat so it looks half way decent.
Whatever paint they used on these mags is fucking tough and i wouldnt reccomend trying to take it off... unless you have a sand blaster, which i suspect woild work well

Yeah but they're kind of hit and miss from what I've read. Converting them to be reliable involves switching or modding the follower and removing the follower stops so the follower can raise get the rounds up a little higher. Not all of the mags were converted properly.

Just stop while you're ahead, anon. By the time you get a "match grade" barrel installed you'll have put way more time and effort into accurizing your AK than it's really worth. Get a decent surplus trigger group, fit it to your gun, polish it, and then run Barnaul Brown Bear for best consistency within reasonable price ranges for 7.62x39. If you can find some of the Norma brass case or are willing to cough up the cash for American Eagle, you'll get even better consistency, but frankly, if you're trying to shoot one-holes, you're going to find a lot more flexibility and cost-effectiveness going to the AR platform.

This is more of a general question, doesn't specifically apply to AKs... How good are Bore Snakes for cleaning barrels? I have a couple cleaning rods for a couple different firearms but I honestly find the whole process to be a pain in the ass, just a tedious process. I was thinking of just using bore snakes instead since they seem a lot easier. The thing is I've heard so many conflicting views on them. Some people say they're perfectly adequate for the average shooter, some people say they barely get the barrel clean and that you absolutely need a rod if you want to actually clean your gun.

I haven't seen a 20 round Type 68 Star mag go for $150 in years. You might be able to turn one up for ~$200 if you're lucky, and see the listing as soon as it pops up.
They seem more sought after than the 20 black bakelites, which regularly go for $180+.

Two of my three AKs are polish builds. One is from Atlantic firearms, the other is from Definitive Arms. Both are straight, nice rifles; though the DAKM from DA is better obviously.
