What's a good shotgun for a gun newbie?

Whatever you can afford

>mossberg 500
>remington 870
thanks for bringing up this thread again.

This. In that order. They're good shotguns for anyone, period.

if you could only own one firearm I would probably pick an AR-15, but a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 is a decent second choice.
10/22 would be a good third.

>over 1000 dollars
Haha I would rather not

AR-15s can be had for $600 now, Remington 870s and Mossberg 500s both cost less than $400 for a more basic model.
You are probably looking at the wrong models, don't even know what you're refering to but none of those 3 guns need to have you spending $1K to attain. I just bought a used Mossberg 500 for under $300 out the door (so including tax and 25$ background check). First time I ever shot a shotgun was the day I bought it and then I spent the next day taking it apart and cleaning it. Very happy with my choice but it wasn't my first gun.
Shotguns are a bit of their own thing in the firearm world, may not be the best first and only gun unless you have a specific need to a shotgun. If you're in the deep woods for instance nothing beats the versatility of a shotgun with a few barrels to change between.
I'd still want a rifle first, like a 10/22 or AR-15 because I am not a hunter.

shotguns are a meme, just get an AR or some other sub-1000 dollar semi-auto. If you don't like it you can probably sell it on armslist for about what you paid for it.

My 870 was $250 after rebate.
mossberg 930

Okay, what's a good budget semi-auto rifle then? You might be right, I might be interested in shotguns for a silly reason.

Anything under 10 gauge. They are the best newbie guns. Pumps will be easier to disassemble and I generally prefer wood stocks. Don't buy a dirt cheap import with shakey QC like the RIAs, and maybe hold off on splurging for something +700 as a first buy until you get a feel for what you want. Fortunately good shotguns can be had for +200 and used quality normally doesnt affect them unless they were abused. Go 20 gauge if you have shoulder problems or something but .410 isn't worth it. I will say that a good over-under like a Weatherby is pure sex.

Maverick 88. You don't need anything else.

My dad has a Remington 870 that he uses every year and has literally never been field stripped or cleaned. I'm pretty sure he's owned it since before I was born. I don't personally like the 870 but credit where it's due, it's reliable as fuck.

Mossberg 500 or a pre-Freedom Group Remington 870
Popular mechanics wrote an article about the 4 tools a man should always have. The remington 870 was one of the 4. Do yourself a favor and get one and make sure it is a police model. That thing will run for ever
If you can't decide between an AT or and M4 then get the closest thing to both and currently at 400 bucks. Look at a Cheetah 12, which is a SAIGA clone, and then get a 20 round drum

Well that Mossberg 930 pictured is pretty nice. I have one and I like it a lot. The piston is a bitch to clean, though.

Birds anon.

This best $199 I ever spent

Old rems are fantastic, especially if they've been well used, the pump runs like glass

If you want a pump defense gun the Winchester SXP defender is a good feeling gun. Can be had for $270 at my local big box and it takes the same parts as the 1300's for the most part. New 870 Express models have very shoddy quality control, the Mav's and Mossbergs are good guns though.
