It's one of those stories where Femto/Griffith did what he had to do. He had been following his own ambitions and all of his men (and casca) has signed on to do anything to help him get there. A lot of his men died over the years fighting wars for him, but they were betrayed by the king and griffith was horribly tortured. So he turned to dark forces to get his revenge by sacrificing his remaining troops.

In a battle, throwing away your soldiers to get a shot at the king would be completely acceptable, so feeding your few remaining loyal troops to demons is acceptable to him.

I'd really recomend reading the manga if you can stomach it, as Griffith is a very good character who makes the wrong choice.

I don't know how people can still read Berserk after learning that the author pulls this much of a miserywank. I haven't actually read this series myself, but isn't the whole point of Guts's character to be able to kill unreasonably powerful demons and shit? Why is it even realistic that something like this should ever be allowed to happen? And really, why is Griffith so obsessed with Guts to the point where he would ever go this far to inflict undue emotional suffering on the guy? Every justification I've ever heard for it just sounds completely pseudointellectual and gay.

The whole idea of this happening at all pretty much reeks of cuckoldry, which is why I won't read it. It's as if the author wrote the entire story for the purpose of making this scene come to life... much like that scene where the kids beat up on the puppy in Elfin Lied. Totally worthless.

Honestly the manga is so good it's the only one I recommend to normal people. The new series was so god damned terrible it forced me to finally start reading it.
