Thoughts on this 72 tons-I-Hate-Pavement-Machine?
>>
looks neat
kind of a pointless vanity project IMO, turkey really didn't need a tank that wasn't already on the market, it's just a matter of national dick measuring to have an indigenous MBT these days.
>>
>>35142206
It's cool as fuck looking but they're having problems with producing an indigenous engine and they don't want to import engines from Germany.

>72 tons
Is it really going to be that heavy? That's almost twice of a t-90 and even heavier than an m1a2 Abrahams.

>tank that wasn't already on the market
>indigenous MBT
oh boy. the absolute state of /k/
>>
>>35142248
It weighs 68-69 tons without additional armor panels and ERA so yeah, it's pretty much the projected operating weight.
>>35142229
Yeeah, Turkey could just order a few hundred Sabra's from Israel and have a highly modernized arsenal for a fraction of the price, seeing how it has literally hundreds if not thousands of M60's.
>>
>>35142261
They are developed by the same teams, you knew that, right? XK2 is the equivalent of the Altay Mobility Test Vehicle.
>>
>>35142283
First, Altay is a stripped down monkey model of K-2. It's perfectly fine to copy shit from someone else, everyone starts somewhere, just don't bother calling it indigenous.

Second, don't bother calling it modern, let alone equivalent to original. It doesn't have autoloader, ERA, NERA and APS, but somehow manages to weight more than K-2. You've copied a cutting edge tank but forgot to add any features that made it cutting edge. So what you end up with is just an updated version of 1980s NATO bricks like Challenger or Abrams.
>>
>>35142683
It has both ERA and APS. We've experimented with autoloaders but they are more of a nuisance than an advantage. K-2 and Altay were developed at the same time by the same companies then they undergone specialisition in Korea and Turkey seperately which made K-2 thinner but longer and lighter because lack of NK infastructure and Altay became wider but shorter to deal with muddy and desert enviroments. Altay uses boron carbide armor which is nearly as hard as diamond and also a very, very heavy material.
>>
>>35142827
Pretty much none of this post passes factchecking.
>>
>>35142248
>Abrahams
kek.

The M1A2 are mid range in terms of MBT mass, complicated mostly by people confusing ton and tonne.
>>
>>35142206
>Altay MBT
There is a rumor in turkey that they send the Leopards 2 into Syria without support fully knowing they will perform bad this way, because the Leopards were in hands of Erdogan and government criticizing part of the military and they wanted to send in Altay with much better support later, which where in hands of Erdogan and government friendly part of the military, to show off how good their stuff is and how useless the government critical forces are. Preparations were made, but in the end they chickened out, fearing the tanks would perform bad even with more support.
>>
>>35142248
>m1a2 Abrahams
why do you people do this? is there some kind of meme about the Abrams name that i dont know about?
>>
>>35142914
It's the combined tyrannies of autocorrect and carelesness most of the time.
>>
>>35142827
Bullshit. Stop drinking the roach koolaid.

And here she's dressed in cage armor and ERA
>>
>>35142827
I'm not finding anything about the boron carbide armour except forum posts, do you have any governmental articles I could read?
>>
>>35142852
Staring at the prototype pic in OP's image isn't fact checking or research, it's 2017, using ERA isn't a big deal, almost any relatively modern country does it, the Sabra tank they buy from Israel uses ERA, so obviously they have plenty of good examples of ERA.

I mean c'mon man, memes aside, Turkey is a pretty big power in it's region, it's a member of NATO ffs.
>>
>>35142985
They named the tank after General Creighton Abrams, not Abraham from the bible.
>>
>>35142827

>hard as diamonds

Ahhh, diamonds, the gold standard for armor comparison.
>>
>>35143155
We do make body armour out of boron carbide so using it as tank armour isn't exactly a stretch, it's innovative and who knows, maybe it will be better than current armour.
>>
>>35143073
Our government and especially army aren't very forthcoming in military R&D so the only good way is going to IDEF, which is strictly military and contractors only. I had heard rumors about the armor so I was skeptical but a relative of mine who works for FNSS, BAE Systems and Nurol was there and it is somekind of prototype armor unlike any kind of boron in use. It is developed by ROKETSAN and apperently it is equivalent to ceramic tank armor only way harder and capable of sustaining more shots than ceramics. Although it is not very well understood and applied before let alone being combat tested but they have very high hopes and statistical data for it.
>>
>>35142206
>Turk knockoff
Probably a shitheap.
>>
It will be interesting to see them sitting on hilltops getting blown up by the FOTM durkadindu group in a few years. Quality of the tank doesn't matter as much as the people driving it.
>>
>>35143189

I mean diamonds ARE the hardest metal

Is ERA the only part of the things that post listed you read?
>>

LT from 5th Armor Brigade(Gaziantep) been to Syria. This is pure bullshit. Leos belonged to 2nd Armor Brigade(Maraş). Joint task force command(Kilis) gave them under the command of 4th Commando Brigade(Tunceli) without any logistics support 2nd ARBDE only sent its armor battalions, not their support battalions or anything as ordered by JTFC. It was a hell for 2nd Armor dudes they did everything they could do without any support and proper command. Sabras(M60T) belonged to the 5th ARBDE and after the first ones took hit on a hilltop heads rolled at the Brigade to avoid same mistakes again. Also, the first iteration of single color desert camouflage was used by my own commander. She really helped a lot and her husband is a battalion commander as well. We also provided the logistics of the whole Euphrates Shield operation.

On some military sites, they point out why the ARVs didn't use to recover Leos. 2nd armor never bring ARVs only we had and we used them for the Sabras. They also operated as a detachment of 4th Commando, not as an independent armor unit.
>>
>>35142827
K2 is light because in korea we have mountains n sheet.
Thats why abrams doesnt work as well in korea as our tank. When we did armoured maneuvers they always lagged behind.
>>
>>35143309
Sounds interesting, hopefully they manage to make it.
